Archived from groups: alt>games>civ3 (more info?)

I just spent god knows how many hours getting to about the year 2000, I
had it all set up and then the game tells me I'm at war with one of the
powers and there was no declaration of war on either of our parts
displayed on screen,The next thing I know theres a display that because
of Indias mutual protection pact with zulu, zulu declared war on me.
There WAS NO DECLARATION OF WAR on either of the principal parties, nor
were either of us motivated to do so since we had always had friendly
relations which took me how many thousands of years to cultivate. I was
ahead and going to win and what I think is a bug in the game cheated
me.

Thats why although I love playing this game it makes more sense to play
chess, theres no cheating or bugs its all right out in the open. I
swear this game f's up constantly with weaker units beating stronger
ones especially for the computer it seems(thats just a minor complaint
though compared to what I just described). I'm pissed off that I spent
hours and hours on this game and thhe game seems to have just invented
a false war that set the entire world who were all friendly with me
against me. Anyone similar stories?

Never heard of that one.
Check your options. I imagine you can turn off the declaration alert screen.

I haven't played c4, but here are a few things to think about.

In C3, city influence size expands. If I have a troop inside the
expansion zone of an opponent, then that opponent can insist I leave
or declare war. In C4, I understand one cannot enter territory
without either permission or declaring war. Could it be that a city
expanded around his troops?

The fact that a mutual protection act was executed indicates that he
somehow invaded the territory of an opponent. in c3 it won't execute
until one invades the other's territory.

If I have an MPP with england and france and the zulu have an mpp with
england and france, i can declare war on the zulu and wait on them to
attack me. when they do, then england and france come to my aid
instead of zulu. If zulu and I only fight naval war or outside our
territories, then neither country will gain aid from the mpps.

Give civ4 a go, it's great!

As far as influence goes tho, if a city's culture expands onto a unit, and
no ROP exists, the unit is "escorted" to the nearest neutral territory. At
least, i think it's the nearest. It's certainly neutral, but i'm not sure of
the exact rules that govern where they get placed. It doesn't cause wars
ever, though.

One thing that took me by surprise once (on Civ3) wad the time when a
Zulu ironclad attacked and sank one of my English destroyers in
international waters without triggering my MPPs but when I retaliated
by sinking the offending ship his MPP /did/ trigger. I was surprised
by this until I realised that the ironclad had been in waters inside
his territory.

The MPP that did trigger was between the Zulus and a power I myself
had an MPP with (Bab's, IIRC). I got my revenge on both of them by
raining down thermonuclear death!

I have a problem keeping peace with other nations when I build too
many nucs, they don't tend to like my stockpiling them. Of course,
when I went to nuclear war in my last play I dropped 30 cities down to
size 1. Smile

The only thing I could think of was that I created a new city that
might have encroached upon his territory. I tried to do that once and
the computer warned me it was an act of war. It didnt warn me this time
though so I thought I was ok.
