They lower or raise (respectively) the amount of ambient light in an
area - any interior designer or movie director can think of dozens of
uses for those effects...

Suppose you (or your friend) have Night Vision 5. Suppose the enemy doesn't?

Then Gloom at torch-light level gives you (or your friend) a very nice edge
in a fight.

That's the kind of subtlety that my group gets up to all the time.

Perhaps you can't see them because of visibility modifiers? Smile

How about Visibility in combat, p. B394? Make it harder or easier for
the aggressors in the whole combat with a simple spell.

Or the more generally applicable "partial darkness" penalties for
Vision rolls, on p. B358. Make things easier or more difficult for
someone trying to do *anything* that involves visibility.

thats good. so.. maybe i presumed that gloom and glow only raise light
levels. they also reduce it. havent thought of that.

They could be modified into 'flashbang' flare or laser spells.
