I'm still just interested in how they're running DC stuff. Is it really
a DC emu, or what?

Yeah, Sega Rally was one the few games that used the Windows CE porting
capabilty of the DC. There are not that many of them out there.

I'm assuming so, but I swear that they were touting titles like Ecco
and other stuff that there wasn't a PC version of, or wasn't a Windows
CE game to begin with. Looking over their site now, I can't find these
games listed anymore. Makes me wonder if they pulled them.

At any rate, here's what GameTap has for DC:

Crazy Taxi
Hydro Thunder
Mr Driller
Prince of Persia: AN
Toy Commander

Now, IIRC, all of these had PC counterparts released at some point,
with the exception of Mr. Driller, which I'd guess is just running off
some Neo emu. anyway. So, in essence, what you'd be playing really
isn't the DC version of anything, they just simply branded it that way.
I'm also noticing that stuff they had originally mentioned as having
the DC version of, is now only available in the "PC" section of the
games(Tomb Raider: LR, etc).

I guess they wanted to see how enticing the DC stuff would be to
people, or they were just trying to throw people off the sent that they
are, in fact, paying for emulators(freeware) and roms via a
subscription service?

I hear Sega is closely involved in this project, so I'd guess that's
where the really odd stuff, like the SG-1000 section, is coming into
play...

I'm pretty damn sure that there was another launch game besides Sega
Rally 2 that had one of those Windows CE screens when you booted up.
Toy Commander does ring a bell. Its not listed up there but I could
swear maybe MDK 2 was one as well, pretty sure that got a PC port as
well.

That is pretty sweet. I don't think that it would be all that popular
in comparsion to more known titles but there are some folks who check
out things out of pure curiosity. I know that I would. Anyone try
this Gametap service out yet?

Oh, wild, I always thought it was a Neo Geo game. Well, at any rate,
with the PC port and the fact that they've got MAME running on GameTap,
one can see how they faked the DC version. Makes you wonder if the DC
version had any special features that we could check into, to see if
this supposed "DC version" of Driller really is.

Oh yeah, there were a few in the DC's library, the above is just all
GameTap's site lists as having for the DC.

Yeah, MDK2 could very well just be the PC port...or, as it's not listed
for DC, it could be the PC version(in the PC section).

Well, basically anything that anyone has done, and they can jack for
free(emulator-wise) has a real good shot at showing up there at one
some point or another. If nothing else, even if only a few people try
the games, it adds to their total number of games and "systems" they
allow you to play; makes the service look better.

> this Gametap service out yet?

They've had free trials going on now and then, but after we figured out
that the DC stuff was pretty much, well, not DC stuff my interest
really waned. After all, I can already play and/or download any given
emu or game they offer. The DC stuff would have been the only thing
that interested me.

I'm not really sure what, if any, special features the DC version of
Mr. Driller had, was just sort of guessing that it may of had something
special just for the DC version in it. If the mic thing is the only
thing they added, then I'd guess you'd be right that it could have been
built into the PC version as well. Ah well, no big deal, I'm still
almost certain that they don't have an actual, running DC emulator.

Driller wasn't a Neo game; it was a stand alone JAMMA board.
Google tells me there was a PC version of Mr Driller, anyways...

That's the one. Always wanted to try it, even after hearing what a lot
of people had to say about it.

Not ever playing it, I'm unsure...though Wiki may offer some info:

I'd never seen this one, nor heard of it before now. The cover makes
it look like it's a port of that "Prince of Persia 3D" PC title from a
handful of years ago that got such a critical reaming. Might that be it?

On a barely-related note, I don't suppose this game shares any
continuity with the current next-gen series? I've gotten kinda sucked
into those, as of late.

I have had it for the last few months; they have a pretty good selection
of games for a variety of the older systems, as well as Windows and DOS
games. Lots of older arcade games. They occasionally have special
weeks focused on new stuff from one publisher (like the Capcom week
that brought their Alpha series of SF games, and also Cyberbots game).
For those with a masochistic streak in them, on the 27th they
will have a Konami week that will introduce Castlevania:Bloodlines and
Contra:Hardcorps (Genesis) and the Time Pilot games. However,
if you are using Windows Media Player 11 beta, you'll have to roll it
back to an earlier point; the video on Gametap will cause a conflict
and cause Gametap to crash (I encountered this screwup, and there was
nothing about this on the FAQ; after I realized where the screwup kept
happening, I rolled back and it has worked fine since).

The emulations seem dead-on to my untrained eye, though the
graphics would look better on my TV than my 19" flat panel.
They all play fine, however. It brings back fond memories
of the Sega Channel, except that all the games added stay
on Gametap after they are introduced.
