even though the ps2, xbox, and 360 are able to play dvds, how many
people use them this way?

i guess things were kinda different way back in 2000 when no one had
dvd players and the ps2 didn't really cost much more than a stock
low-end player...a lot of people wanted one for this reason alone,
considering that the launch lineup blew.

this was a unique situation.

so, how many people are planning on buying a ps3 specifically 'cause it
can play blu-ray disks? are we in the same situation as 2000? it
seems like sony is counting on the fact that we are, but dvds are just
now getting to the point where i can go into target and buy one without
thinking twice 'cause they've gotten so cheap. and, dvds still produce
a picture quality that is plenty high enough for my eyes.

This is just like when the 3DO, PS1, SATURN, etc was out and so much
was hyped about the fact that they could play music CDs. Most just
chose to continue to play their Cds on their stereo or just buy a low
cost cd player.

My PS2 has a better progresive scan image than my Sony DVD Recorder. I
use my PS2 to watch movies in my bedroom.

I'll admit that I'm stoked to see full 1080p resolution movies... but
honestly, I'm not buying a game machine to watch movies. I'd rather have a
good, high end,, stand-alone player for my movies... and the PS3 (or 360 w/
HD-DVD add on) for my games.

The thing is, the 360 remote is $30, but for about $20 more you can
just buy a brand new DVD player with remote and everything. I would
rather not have my 360 being used as a DVD player for 2 hours each time
I watch a movie, that's just extra wear and tear on the HD, fans, dvd
drive, etc. Also, the 360 tends to be a bit too noisy as a movie
player.

I'd gotten used to it as well. But I'll say this, using the 360 remote is a
hell of a lot easier, particularly because it'll even open the DVD drawer
for me.

360 games won't be released in HD-DVD so the only reason you'd need
the add-on is to watch HD-DVD's. There aren't even current plans to have 360
developers switch to HD-DVD in the future either. Since the 360 already
renders games in HD, putting them on HD-DVD doesn't make a whole lot of
sense, the majority of games aren't going to need the extra space. The only
thing it sounds like you're going to need besides your regular 360 is a
stand alone player, not the add-on.

As for me, the majority of things I watch on DVD are older TV shows that
can't be reasonably put on HD-DVD because they were shot on video, not film.
From everything I've read, TV shows shot during the 70s, 80s and much of the
90s just will look horrible on HD-DVD because the original video print only
has 350 lines of resolution. So, for me there's really no reason to switch
to HD-DVD or blu-ray until they figure out technology to translate shows
shot on video into good HD quality images. Really, the only TV show I'd be
interested in that is definitely capable of being put on HD-DVD and looking
good is I Love Lucy because it was shot on film.

While I didn't buy any console for its abilities to play DVDs, for the
longest while the only DVD-capable players I had in my old apartment
were my desktop PC and my XBox. Given that I didn't mind watching
movies by myself on the PC, when I had company over it sucked to not be
able to use the larger screen in the living room, so I picked up the DVD
remote and dongle for the XBox (since I already had the console and the
remote/dongle combo were slightly cheaper than a component DVD player).
To this day, I haven't gotten around to picking up a stand-alone DVD
player.

My (ex)gf from the same time period spent a great deal of time using
her kids' PS2 as a DVD player, as it was the only one in the house. We
all got quite used to using a game controller as the remote.

Well, when the PS2 came out, I used it as my exclusive DVD player... 6
years later I have 2 DVD recorders and I just got finished watching Deadwood
Season 2 disc 4 on a new*ish* slim PS2... I'll most definitely use my PS3 as
a Blu-Ray player... now, in regards to cost... it may be a while until I
make that leap... There are too many good PS2 games out to rush to the PS3
at $600.....

I wouldn't buy the PS3 just to watch movies, but if I had it I most
likely would use it that way. Personally, I think HD is incredible for
watching sports; but I really don't think it adds that much over 480p
when watching a movie; so the Blue Ray or HD-DVD wouldn't be that much
of a selling point for me. That's personal preference though.

Currently I use my 360 if I'm going to watch a movie just because it's
one less component to hook up to my TV, my surround sound and finding
power and room for.

Why would there be any wear and tear on the HDD while watching a movie?
To be honest, I've never in my life ever had a fan or a HDD go up on
me either on a computer or a console; so I don't know how much I would
worry about that. Yes, it could hapen, but it isn't really that
common. I have had DVD drives go (for some reason always in a console)
but that has always been because of dust, which really shouldn't be
effected that much by usage.

I could see the problem with noise, that would be annoying.

I'm not sure if the 360 shuts down the HDD when it's not in use,
perhaps it does. I've never had a cooling fan totally fail, but I've
had numerous ones on computers that got noisy over time and I've seen a
lot of DVD drives with problems, and game consoles put a LOT more
strain on a DVD drive than your average desktop computer. I guess I
would personally just rather not put additional milage on the DVD drive
by using it to watch movies.

That's funny, because my DVD player died just a few days ago, and I
didn't replace it yet. So I started to watch DVD movies on PS2 (for the
first time Smile ) The controls are not very intuitive (basicaly I'm happy
that I found pause button Smile ).

Since they're usually fairly mediocre, I have never used a game machine
as my main video player. I do use the 360 as a DVD player in the back
bedroom, since that's where the only HDTV is.

I use the XBOX a considerable amount to play DIVX and MP3s though, with
XBMC. That's a great piece of software.
