Got a game started with you, Norm and I.
Let m eknow if there are other takers, I'd prefer a 4-5 player game before I
start it.

Norm!
Why did you exit the game? 'Cause we shuffled decks before starting
the game? I mean, ok, if you aren't used to that, sure, but really,
was it necessary to abandon the game? We aren't playing for money or
anything.
The JOL shuffler blows chunks. So before starting, every game I have
ever played in, I have put my hand back, shuffled the deck 4 or 5
times, and redraw. Granted, I have never played in a tournament or
anything, but still. How was this a reason to ditch the game?
Confused.

Okay, Okay, I'll play. It just freaked me out when my predator called

Phew. Really. We are on the up and up here. No one is trying to get a
dubious advantage--the shuffler does blow, and generally speaking, all
the games I have been in started with people shuffling their hands
into their decks, shuffling 4 or 5 times, and redrawing, just on the
principal that the shuffler blows. I did this on the first turn, and
got a much worse hand than I started out with. But it also didn't have
4 of the exact same card in it (which I don't even have that many of
in the deck in the first place...)
If it had been a tournament or something, I would have asked table
opinion on the subject first (as would have everyone else, I'm sure),
but as it is just a fun pick up game, I figured that worst case
scenario would be someone saying "Huh. Don't do that." and that would
be that.

If you believe the shuffler blows, why do you believe that shuffling 4
or 5 times increases randomness?
In my opinion, the JOL shuffler is perfectly fine. Perhaps we can get
George to post the algorithm and analyze it. If it's not sufficiently
randomizing cards, we should fix it. If it is randomizing cards, we
could avoid wasting time shuffling decks that are already shuffled.
Ira, likes randomness. >> Stay informed about: Looking for a game of JOL |

The initial shuffle is often problematic. In far too many games I get
to a point where I either draw several copies of the same card in a
row or draw a pile of masters, situations that happen much less
frequently IRL. When I have reshuffled, I tend to have less of that
problem. It is not always the opening hand that is trouble, but
something in the way the program establishes the deck.
I also dislike the fact that if you put a card back on top of your
deck, it appears to get randomized back into your library. So, it may
be that the algorithm needs a bit of work.
Cheers,
John >> Stay informed about: Looking for a game of JOL |

The initial shuffle is the one that seems to be horrible--multiple
times I have started a game, had 4 of the same card in my opening hand
and while drawing, draw into strings of cards (i.e. draw 3 or 4 of the
same card in a row). Shuffling a few times seems to help.

Ok.

It doesn't really waste any time.
