Well, the dragon flew away with him. He never even tried
to get free of the grapple, just kept trying to win it.
The image of the tiny little monk struggling to sink
a choke hold while dangling largely ignored from the
neck of the dragon as it flies back to its lair,
comedy gold.

Dolarn ('paladin of Kord') tried that with a wee baby white dragon.
It kicked his ass. That whole 'fly out of reach and use breath weapon'
thing. If it had just stayed where Dolarn could've gotten hold of him
it would've been a lot more fun.
As a DM I respect that this was probably the most tactically sound thing
it could do in the circumstances. As a storyteller, I'm disappointed
the DM didn't go with it -- win or lose, it would've been a cool event.

I told some of my players about this. There was this stunned silence
over the phone, and then laughter. Then 'did what ?!'.

Probably much funnier than most cartoons these days.

Heh. The elf druggie in one of our games got a white dragon stoned
out of its guord once. Well, it was an insane "artist" dragon who
froze its victums and carved them pretty, but still... >> Stay informed about: What was your funniest time gaming? |

At the time it was actually a not-entirely-dumb thing to do. If the
damned bugger would've stayed still and in reach it probably would've
been about an even match.
Remember, 'paladin of Kord', patron of wrestlers and enemy of dragons.
For Dolarn to have been able to defeat a dragon (of *any* size!) with
his bare hands, especially so early in his career, would've been a Great
Deed, I'm sure.
Heh. At third level (shortly after this), before leaving town, Dolarn
had a shrine to Kord built and he consecrated it. It needed some kind
of heroic elements attached to it, so he also had a statue of himself
made and left behind some of his trophies -- his armor that had been
ruined, broken weapons from powerful enemies, that sort of thing --
along with the story of each one.
FWIW, Dolarn wasn't doing it to brag about himself, quite. That is, it
wasn't "look how badass I am!" but "look what was done with the gifts of
Kord!". Dolarn just didn't have any other followers of Kord nearby to
include the deeds of.

Especially with the slipping-and-falling-onna-ice bits.

It was at an RPG convention, so we were playing one-use characters in
a standalone adventure. We start out stripped of all equipment and
imprisoned in an orc dungeon, with orcs getting ready to prepare
dinner (us). Each of us is in a separate cell with iron bars. One of
the characters is a half-ogre fighter with stats you would expect from
a half-ogre. My character (human monk) shouts the half-ogre's name to
get his attention, then yells "If you don't break this door, you will
NEVER EAT AGAIN!".
Everyone cracked up, the DM rolled a few dice, then turned to the guy
playing the half-ogre: "You just ripped the cell door off its hinges".
The rest of that adventure was almost as good. >> Stay informed about: What was your funniest time gaming? |

Why does the line: "Once I was a 98-pound weakling", come to mind?

Well. Dolarn always *was* big and strong. When the cleric of Kord
showed up he was about ready to believe that Kord was why this was so,
and 'converted'.
There was a bit in the adventure -- Sunless Citadel, I think? We were
underground, there were kobolds, the white dragon was their pet and we
had its keeper (named Meepo, IIRC) with us. We didn't trust him, so we
kept him tied up. We didn't want to be slowed down, so Dolarn was
carrying him... much like a sports bag. Extolling the benefits of
following Kord the whole time.
"Yah, so Kord made me, an' he made me big an' strong an' such. I bin
like dis all m'life, so I figger Kord alwuz wid me. Yer not so big, but
I bet dat if you 'cide to follow Kord, he'll make you bigger an'
stronger too."
All said while one-arming the kobold by the ropes tied around him,
swinging him around to show him stuff (or ask him about it), etc. So I
guess Kord was trying to convert the kobold from the 20-pound weakling
to a big, buff, 35-pound tough guy.
No, Dolarn was not a terribly clever person. Why do you ask?
