Actually a very large number of people outside the US are big fans of
American Football, myself included. It is a far better sport than
Rugby, Aussie rules or soccer IMO.

Which is why it's a great sport, intelligent gameplay mixed with great
athleticism and violence. What's not to like?

The lack of pace and the intermissions between each action.
This is typically american and for that reason will never make it in
Europe where we like continuous action.
Modern rugby's a good compromise, because there's some coaching
involved, but it doesn't kill the rythm of the action. The 3/4 of the
teams actually DO play the 80mn of the match.
As for athleticism and violence, just watch a New Zealand All Blacks vs.
South Africa Springboks game. You'll have it full scale with no pads to
absorb 95% of the shocks. Those guys REALLY hate each other, so much
that it's scary!
As for speed, I think AB Joe Rokocoko's just as good as any NFL WR.
France had and has some very good runners too, like Emile N'Tamak
(retired) or wingmen like Dominici, Elhorga, etc.
It takes some skill to pass slightly backwards while running full speed
and having one of those opponent 250lb linemen about to crush you at
full speed too, or achieving a good up'n'under or a follow-up kick.
That's what I don't understand in NFL games: why the heck doesn't the
ball carrier kick the ball ahead sometimes just to give himself some air
to run, and why don't they ever attempt a drop kick between the posts
when they've reached the red zone ?

That is a strength of it so you can watch slo-mo replays to appreciate
what has just happened.

The reason they wear armour is so there aren't multiple fatalities and
mamings each season as there was before armour was used.

That's why rugby has rules about tackles. They can be as violent as you
dare (I think the shock and pressure in a ruck pack is even more brutal
than the tackles. Last year, for example, an Australian lineman broke a
cervical disc under a ruck pressure. A ruck pack can weigh up one ton.
Light helmets have been allowed for linemen so that they wouldn't lose
an ear or break their skull during the engagement shock or under the
pressure) but you may not, for example, grab the opponent's neck or head
(high tackle) or block/tackle a player who isn't actually carrying the
ball. In french, this is called "passage à vide".
The most frequent injuries in rugby are open arcades, like boxers
(bleeds a lot, but it's a light injury cured by a simple pressure with
oxygenated water and suture) and tearing of the crossed ligaments often
caused by a side tackle in the knees.
Rugby's the second most dangerous international sport in the world after
horse riding.
If you can put your hands on the return South Africa vs. New Zealand
Tri-Nation match of last month, you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Try watching some American Football then you might have a clue what
you are talking about. Armour is absolutely essential as even with it
there are probably more injuries than in Rugby.

I'm not particularly interested in rugby either, but I'm sure he's
going to give you the argument that many of the injuries in American
football are CAUSED because of the armour.

Many injuries are caused by the players being *too damn big*.
Ankles and knees just weren't built to support those sizes of players making
the moves that they do. >> Stay informed about: Madden '06...quick impressions |

I suppose you mean fat'n'heavy ? Yes, and BTW I've watched a lot of NFL
games on Canal+ and other satellite channels.
I especially enjoy the running backs, who are a great inspiration for
professional rugbymen.
I rugby, even the heavier lineman (2nd line) can run a little and
actually defend and tackle when the opponent has the ball - they don't
just swap the entire team everytime the ball possession changes side.
And yes, too, the armour allows for a feeling of security that makes
players feel unbreakable so that they'll litterally unload on their
opponents, risking casualties even for themselves.
When you really feel the hit you're giving to your opponent, you think
twice before attempting to knock him out. Basically, you're happy with
having him fall on the ground or put a foot out of the field limits.
You also know that youy won't play 40s, go to the bench breath oxygen
for 5mn and then come back. You're supposed to play 2x40mn non-stop
except on injury or for some coaching purpose.
> Ankles and knees just weren't built to support those sizes of players making

The same could apply to basket-ball players: it's not a contact sport,
but they jump high and they can easily get injured when falling back to
the ground. A friend of mine had his two ankles fractured (open
fractures, blech!) while playing some basket-ball in the playground with
some pupils.
As for myself, I'm 6ft6, 125kg (aprox. 260lb) and I used to play full
back in my school rugby team (13 players, not 15. Otherwise I'd have
been a 2nd lineman).
