ComputServe had usenet gatetways back then, as did several small
BBS'es(remember them?) that had some gateway applications to limited sets
of groups. I think AOL had something way back then as well, albeit heavily
limited. Or else maybe he was in school and his college had access.

been about 6 years old

BBS's - some had usenet, some didn't.
It was a lot more fun back then when we didn't really understand the
technology....twas something like 'magic'. But I digress....
