I just did two tests:
Speakeasy - New York - 1.6 Mb/s d/l - 700K u/l; and
Sprint - Chicago - 1.2 Mb/s d/l - failed upload.
I pay $44.95. For that, I' entitled to 5 e-mail accounts - one 10 Meg
and four 5 Meg, plus 5 Mb for a webspace.
One issue with ADSL is distance from the node and they're good for about
a 4 mile radius. The actual speed will vary depending on traffic load and
type of server setup being accessed.
Cheers,

You are quite correct. I got caught by that. My ISP took me up to 20
mbs. They had to change my modem to do this, but I seemed to be getting
only 1 mbs. Took the router out of the equation and got 20 mbs. I was
able to talk between computers on the LAN side at 100 mbs but the WAN to
LAN throughput was limited by processor speed to around 1 Mbs.
Look at

for details. >> Stay informed about: Anxiously waiting for 6.0 Mbps today |

Also with virginmedia. Usually get the full 20 meg, but very annoyed
that they haven't informed people about the usage cap. Just discovered
it in the support forum. They claim it is unlimited, and I guess they
are correct as they don't actually stop you getting the file you were
downloading, nor do they charge you extra. They just slow you down for
the benefit of others in the area. >> Stay informed about: Anxiously waiting for 6.0 Mbps today |

24Mbps (actually 20Mbps from high speed servers at best but I can live
with it for 45 euros (70USD)/month in Finland. Not cheap, but who cares,
but there's plenty of bandwith for all the family and neighbours
(sharing WLAN).

The specs say 8.0 Mbps for this modem. It may simply be internal jumpers for
all I know.
Actually, I'd rather have 8.0 Mbps in both directions than have 54 Mbps only
for download. >> Stay informed about: Anxiously waiting for 6.0 Mbps today |

I hope your wireless LAN is secured using Mac Address Encryption.
The last thing you will want is your connection being hijacked for P2P
downloading or worse child porn etc.

The 54Mbps is between the modem and the computer not between the modem and
the internet.

Virgin bought it from NTL, a right bunch of cowboys and are now looking to
sell it again. Not many takers though.

Virgin didn't buy anything from anyone. Branson is just letting NTL/Telewest
use the name for something like 10% worth of shares. I think you'll find
most of the board is the original NTL one.

Was that in The Mirror or The Sun?
Well, if anything the old dial-up connection were safe.
No need for a firewall, and because the speeds were so low we actually
spent more time outdoors. But it was in no way cheap.

I remember when we fist had 512k cable - £50.00 ouch!
Why didn't you need a firewall for dialup? Did you use Linux?
When we had dialup, we had nights where Zone Alarm hardly ever stopped
giving off intrusion alerts. I know one person who lost control of her PC to
a script kiddie using NetBus over dial up.

I ditched NTL a couple of years ago when they refused to provide
broadband to my home saying the line wasn't compatible despite BT and
my current Tiscali providor saying it was (and is)
