Home is patterned after Second Life. They are similar. It is
unstable, but free. Home will definitely be a smoother experience,
and more stable, but definitely less dynamic (losing some of the charm
of Second Life). Well, the graphics are getting an update on Second
Life, which is making it out of reach of more and more computers.

This is a valid point, but Home IS like Second Life, just less dynamic
and integrated in with Sony's games. As far as people go, there is
potential for it. And if the experience does catch on, people will be
doing it. But, the cost will likely end up being at not playing games
in the world as much. More time you spend customizing your home, the
less you are in game. XBox Live manages all this for you.

Sony is banking on it becoming an environment Sony game fans will park
themselves into, so they then can run advertising all over the place
and sell ad space. Maybe it will run smooth. I do know the amount of
commerce generated by users in Second Life isn't a lot. One is better
off getting a minimum wage job and doing it.

Well, I hope it shows the Second Life experience can translate into
something that will benefit gaming.

The episode of the Office with Dwight's Second Life was freaking
hillarious.

I hope you're right.

However, listening to the Sony execs. talk about Home, I have my doubts.
Especially since they cite that exact scenario (marching your avatar to
the movie theater) as a prime example of why Home is going to be so great.

*Shudder*

Sony is the exact kind of organization where its clueless management has
complete dictatorial control over engineering decisions, which could
result in something management thought was a good idea, but everyone else
just thinks "What were they thinking!??"

Reminds me of an earlier press conference about Home where someone asked
what was Sony going to do to try and keep users from using profanity or
other bad words on what's essentially an open voice & text chat room. The
Sony rep taking answers couldn't even wrap his head around that, and
basically flubbed the answer by replying "Why is your mind in the gutter?"

Maybe that's one reason Home has been delayed twice now? Either that, or
we're going to see some REAL interesting lawsuits come 2009...

Home and Second Life are similar, but were created for different
purposes. Second Life, for all intents and purposes, is basically a
themeless graphical MUSH or MUU. Home, on the other hand, actually has
more similiarities to one of those 3d avatar chat programs, like IMVU,
complete with the aspect of using real world money to purchase in-game
items for your avatar and apartment.

Having Home available for free, as something that's competing with games
which the user must purchase is what's the most confusing to me. Sony has
repeatedly emphasized the details THEY think are neat - such as
customizing your apartment and arranging your trophies - but seriously,
who is going to really care about that stuff?

I dunno, the virtual casinos were supposedly making good money before
Secodn Life shut them down until they figured out the legalities of
gambling. (I think they just ignore the virtual prostitution for the sake
of their sanity.)

Anyone else find it strange that they say the 360 version is better in
all but two points but end up saying they'd get the PS3 version?

Weird...

Installation - Winner - 360
"The PlayStation 3 version has a mandatory 3.4 GB hard drive
installation that will be the longest 7 minutes and 20 seconds of your
life if you're chomping at the bit to play."

Frame Rate - Winner - 360
"The Xbox 360 version seemed capable of achieving a smoother frame
rate, peaking higher in certain circumstances, such as in confined
spaces or during light traffic"

Pop-In & Loading - Tie - But what was the point of the HD install on
the PS3?
"The Xbox 360 version can suffer from some very noticeable texture
loading, as things like trees, vehicles and building signs will
regularly pop-in as one tools about town. It can be distracting,
especially during high speed chases, and the PS3 version isn't
entirely immune from it."

Graphics - Winner - 360
"Initially, it appeared that the PS3 suffered from more noticeable
aliasing than its 360 counterpart, but after eyeballing the final
retail copy, they appear to be on par. I noticed that the paint filter
applied to cover some of the game's imperfections appeared a tiny bit
muddier on the PS3 version, with night time scenes seeing more
streakiness."

Downloadable Content - Winner - 360
"If you're looking for more GTA IV, and you may very well be after
you've completed the core game, you're going to want the 360 version."

Achievements - Winner - 360
"The Xbox 360 version has the requisite list of Achievements exclusive
to the platform, creative and challenging goals that sometimes go
beyond the regular gaming experience."

Motion Controls - LOSER - PS3
"You'll probably leave it off, just like I did."

Good Vibrations - Winner - 360 (PS3 requires purchase of a new
controller)
"GTA IV supports vibration in the Xbox 360 controller and the
DualShock 3, so PS3 owners won't be left in the force feedback lurch."

But then they wrap it up...

"If this were a personal decision, I'd have chosen the PlayStation 3
edition"

? Huh?
