I suggest you start with any with Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Off
first...they pave the way....that would be, off the top of my head,
Witches Abreoad, Lords and Ladies (has some hysterical parts in it),
Maskerade (a sort of paroduy of Phantom of the Opera ala Pratchett)....

The first one I ever read was Moving Pictures. It's a stand alone book out
of the series. You don't need to read them all in order, but it can make
better sense if you read the ones that use the same main character in the
right order.
There's some help here.

Managed it in the end. It was perfectly good, but the hassle getting it..
and this is the legal version we are entitled to because we pay Sky £££
every month. register - done that already. Oh dear, you didn't use this
computer, you can't use 2...phone call because the computer used doesn't
exist now. Wait. Download. try to watch. get told you don't have the
license to watch - go to the website. I don't know how that got sorted - I
went and read half a book in the meantime. Once it was we could watch it
for 6 days.

While I was watching it I recorded part 2 on the Sky box and watched it
straight after.

Not at all bad. Nice and OTT. Good specialFX. I enjoyed it.

At the risk of a public lynching I would say the vast majority of the later
Discworld books can be safely left on the shelves until you are really
desperate for something to read.

The fifth one was released last year. "First Among Sequels." I haven't
read it yet. Still waiting for it to turn up at the used book store I
frequent. <g>

I think I must have read 3 of them. I hadn't heard about the new one. Our
library gets these things, but with branches all over the county there is no
saying where they might be originally displayed. A locak used book store
would be useful. Smile

As Katy said, this is just my opinion, but when you read the first books
they bounce along, as though he is eager to get everything down and it all
comes tumbling out and still makes me laugh.
Now, the later books are just as funny, in places, but they are also
'clever' and sometimes 'meaningful'. They no longer feels as though he had a
wonderful idea and had to get it down on paper, it is more of an idea that
is put down on paper and made wonderful as he went along. I suppose an
academic would say they are better crafted, or something, and I dare say
they are. But they no longer sparkle.

The last couple I read I actually didn;t care if I finished them or not. His
earlier books I read in one sitting.
..
Natch, this is not confined to Pratchett. Tom Sharpe, who I lionise as a
writer of upheaval and chaos has had some real clunkers, but his first few
books... Cor blimey!
It must be damn hard thinking up new ideas to fill a whole novel all the
time - and still keep it reading fresh

and since then I have gone backwards. I am currently with Peacock again.

Ah, but that is not a loony book; it is a novel, where anything goes. I
meant the books where the authors swear it is all true - at least, to get
the money, they do; some of them actually mean it. 8(
Now I think of it, I haven;t read a good one for ages. There was something
about a mystical crescent stretching over France which was grade A hokum -
wasn;t that after the Holy Blood, Holy Grail split up?
Shows how long it is. Older ones are best. 50-60-70s. They churned out some
smashers then - complete with photos. Cool))
