The client layout was a huge stumbling block for me. If I hadn't
already loved the earlier versions, it may have put me off enough to
not register the game.

Anything that prevents others from not playing is a good thing.

I could probably be considered a minor recruiter for the "Cult" that
is Planets4. I pulled in a couple of brothers and a couple of friends
(and one of them pulled in several others). Out little group has been
pretty good about bringing the new players up to speed. We've
generally only been playing privately hosted games, but once the
current one finishes up, we will probably be using Drewheads, as
privately hosting a game can be a real headache.

That does look like it would be simpler for people who are just learning
the game for the first time. Every little bit helps.

Comm sounds good to me, short and direct.

between yours and Lord Lancelots idea i have been thinking abit about
the unused space.

if it were possible i would love to see several new buttons in here,
the first would be fleets, i would rather see an icon show up for each
fleet i have created appear in this blank area. it just seesm easier
for me to press one button to get my fleet window as opposed to
pressing two buttons. this fleet button would not allow for you to
change the ships in the fleet, but authorize commands for the fleet
would be allowed. keep the fleet manager and make it the only way to
add or remove ships from the fleet. several times now i have
accidently added or deleted ships from complex fleet formations. i
want to see a way to command the fleet without accidntly deleting a
vessel.

the second idea is the the" Central Command HQ" button currently you
press this button to have access for 6 more. its merely an envelope
with no real data. remove the HQ button and place the 6 buttons that
are currently inside it on the main bar. add several other buttons 1
with a hook in it, that will allow me to launch a pre-designated
programs such as mineplacer, diplomat, raceview, raceview2, vidi
vicki, etc the other button i would like to see is export CSV data in
this area.

another idea for the empty space would be to put fleets there as
mentioned above, but something a lil different. clicking on the fleet
icon would change it from green to red. clicking again would change it
from red to green. red means view is off, green means view is on. an
excellent and easy way to view on and off rarely commanded services
vessels such as 50 acquillas whose only puepose is to generate food.

Great ideas, though the fleet buttons would need to be clearly grouped
together, or newbies will be overwhelmed by the number of buttons.

That supports my view of the game. I think it answers why the player base
is the size that it is even after so many years. Ive been an owner of VGAP4
since 2001 and I still dont feel like registereing my code yet. Much less
buying more.

I think that its a shame too. I was also a lover of VGAP3 and before that.
I think that we may have lose the V3 crowd who got tired of waiting for V4
to become an improved version.
