That's not helping...

Is this true? Is that just with vanilla ps3 or with a linux distro
installed or due to the media streaming? I'd read somewhere the ps3
couldn't playback avi files etc.
I am more interested in its media centre abilities than playing games on
it at this point in time.

Remember the Soviet Union? They decided to quit after watching a

PS3 can actually play all these files (upscaled to 1080P) natively
through internal or external hard-disks, flash drives, memory sticks
or CF/SD cards, or by streaming over the network. It's a DivX
certified device. Sony worked with the DivX folks and had an official
press release about it. The functionality was added in firmware 2.1.
Before that, PS3 could only play mpeg2 avi files.

Irrational, incoherent. These are the terms used by folks with
reading comprehension disabilities to describe that which they are
unable to understand.

Although I will say "a few months" was a bit optimistic on my part.
Probably more like 10 months if history repeats.

Arg!

Had I known that, I wouldn't have recently bought a Pinnacle Show Center.

I think it will be at least 6 months and I would also buy it on PC for the
mods that will be released. In the interim, though, at least I could be
playing it on the telly now and again.

From past experience, I'll end up buying the 360 and give up playing GTA in
disgust after about 3 hours, vowing *never* to buy another console - after
placing it in the drawer with the N64, Dreamcast, PS2 and Wii of course...

Very interesting. I did not know this. Thank you for your reply. This
still doesn't address my first issue -- the lack of ANY console games
that appeal to me -- but I have been educated and will do more research
on the matter.

Much obliged.

Heh. Fair enough. This may turn the console into something I could use
after all ... just not for playing games.

Thanks for the info!

People have been buying (original) Xboxs cheap, chipping them, then
using them solely as media centres. Network it, leave it under the
TV, and you're good to go.

That's exactly what I did - bought a pre-chipped Xbox (not a 360), installed
XboxMediaCenter software on it, connected up a wireless bridge, and now
I can stream avis, mp3s etc from my PC over WiFi to my Xbox and play them on my
TV, browse my photo collection, stream videos from YouTube, watch movie
trailers off the internet, and even play Xbox games directly from the hard
disc.

Best value-for-money gadget I bought!
