Chaos Space Marines have always been broken down into individual warbands
(apart from maybe the Alpha Legion, and to some extent the Black Legion),
made up of the 10 millennia bitter vets as well as less experienced
warriors. I don't know where anyone would get that assumption that CSMs were
all Horus Heresy era vets and that the Legions remained in a coherent and
unified force, because its always been in the fluff that CSMs have had there
numbers swelled over time by the more recent arrivals, whether they be newly
inducted neophytes to an original legion, individual turncoats or full scale
Chapter defections.. Just because its been spelled out more explicitly it
doesn't represent the full scale GW retcon in action that you seem to think
it does.

Yes, because that was exactly what I was saying. <eyeroll> My point was (and
still is) that in the new codex there was a general focus on renegades
rather than the original traitor legions. This has been mentioned in several
places, including here, and is cited as one of the factors in the general
blandness of the new CSM codex. Obviously with the HH novels that are coming
out, they haven't abandoned the original legions, but the overall tone is
that the legions are "yesterday's news". However, you seemed to miss the
fact that I was being a bit sarcastic. You decided that a single sentence
was an explicit statement of all that I believe regarding CSMs rather than a
general overview of the situation hightened by a bit of hyperbole for
humerous effect. I'm sorry you are only able to take text at face value
without any kind of ability to infer context.
Did anyone else here miss that point too or am I simply much worse at
communication than I thought I was?

Oh, I see what you did there. Clever! You turned everything back on me by
hinting I was feeling out of place here and whining about it. Well, I am
SOOOO burned. >> Stay informed about: [40K] The Ork Codex is ruined for me... |

I think the actual reason many people are pissed off isn't so much what it
says in the "new" background (concerning which, you are correct - it isn't
really new at all), but the more tangible fact that certain elements of the
army list (terminators, veterans especially) have turned into codex marines
with horns, and this is exacerbated by the removal of the power-specific
variant lists. it's because the new emphasis on post-Heresy traitors in the
background looks like an excuse for the new army list that it gets singled
out.
plenty of players agree with the designers that this is a good thing because
it makes chaos marines more user-friendly and easily accessible to, well,
shall we say "imaginatively-challenged" players. and even those of us who
don't would agree that the previous list was too open to powergamery abuse.
however, it still tastes a lot like "dumbing down" to players who
appreciated the variety and chaotic flavor of the previous list. >> Stay informed about: [40K] The Ork Codex is ruined for me... |
