Shadow priests are pretty rocking. ; )
I never thought twice about taking on single mobs 2 or 3 levels higher
than myself. And before TBC when I was still at 60, there were many
mobs out in the world a few levels lower than myself that I'd happily
take on 2 to 4 at a time. Grinding Timbermaw rep in northern Felwood
I'd often take on the camps of 5 or 6 at a time. Sometimes got a bit
dicey, but then again, I rarely had healing or mana potions to use and
rarely if ever thought to bandage while the mobs were all feared. I'm
a bit better player now than then I think.
Additionally, as a shadow priest in instances, I'll often be right up
near the top of the damage done, unless it's a lower level instance,
in which case mobs are often dead before I really get going.
Basically I cast Vampiric Touch, SW:Pain, VE, and then the mob dies
before I can even get halfway through a mind flay.
In a recent Arcatraz run I was at 30% of the damage done only getting
beaten out for top place by a hunter at 32%. The mage in the party
was more like 24% I think. I was playing it pretty close to the limit
of drawing agro, and I did once when I lost focus on the KTM meter
though. Still, the only wipe in the run was when the tank got hit by
a 10k meteor and died. I managed to tank it for 5 or 6 seconds, but
totally not enough time to nuke it down as it was fairly early on we
lost the tank.
The Shadow priest has Mind Control to help with crowd control if you
really need it, though with a good tank you'll be better of dps'ing
and getting through all the mobs quicker. Gotta be careful when you
start using it, but the healing from Vampiric Embrace can really add
up. With the Shadow priests two dot's and mindflay, you can be
healing anyone that doesn't have full health for around 100hp/sec. If
a mob gets lose and manages to take out your healer, you can drop
shadow form and still do some half decent healing. Prayer of Mending
and Renew are both instants, so it doesn't matter that you don't have
the holy talents to reduce casting time. With a shadow and disc spec
I solo healed a Sethekk Halls run when I was 70 and all the others in
the party were 67, which is about the level the mobs *start* in there.
They were pretty clued up players though.
Also, shadow priests can have a debuff on mobs they attack with a few
common shadow spells that makes the mobs take an extra 5% damage from
*all* types of magic, and 10% on top of that from shadow damage,
though it takes a few hits to get up to 10%. So we're good for the
mages and warlocks too. : )
All that said, it's been so long since I actually started my priest
that I can't really recall what it was like. I'm half tempted to make
another to remind myself, but I've got toons of all the classes, some
as young as 21 that I feel I should level first.
Basically, I love my shadow priest. : )
