The reason I started doing the stats back in April 2003 (yes, 4 years
ago!) was the high volume of traffic in the group. Nowadays it's just
not that interesting when I can get at least 3rd place in the posters
stats only with my Predictions League posts.

I care. Smile But I've been quite busy lately, so I kept delaying it until
it was too late...

Anyone? Yes, a lot of people. At least in Croatia, we're that kind of a
nation. Give us sports and we'll all be happy. I, on the other hand,
share your opinion and think it would be a waste of money. We have no
infrastructure. Osijek and Rijeka would need completely new 30000+
capacity stadia. Their teams average attendances aren't even 3000.

The best thing for me was the self-confidence of the president of
Croatian FA. According to him it was practically a sure thing. In the
end -- Poland/Ukraine 8, Italy 4, Croatia/Hungary 0. Smile

He could not get in tight with Platini. If it were Blatter............

Anyway, the Poles have their Polish dumplings. That's something to hold out to the
world as a national trademark. What can Croatia offer? At least Hungary has goulash.
(No. I did not know why I referenced national dishes as a prime requirement for
gaining hosting rights either.)

er, none you'd have heard of really, most of them are youth team
promotions/regens now.

the only players still in my squad who you'll have heard of are
cristiano ronaldo (picked up on a free from man u when he was 29),
kwabena agouda (bought for 35mill from...er... a french team i can't
recall off the top of my head, spent 4 seasons as top scorer, european
striker of the year twice) and micah richards, who is a bloody solid
DC for me.

as for 'current' world stars, i've too many too list.

i've 7 england 1st teamers in my squad, one of whom is world player of
the year (chris wilkinson, 21yo, 28.5mill) and about another 9 full
internationals for major nations.

In the original database he is fully owned by West Ham, but 80% of any
transfer fee would go to Corinthians. Bizarrely, Tevez doesn't have a
similar clause in his contract, and he's worth £16m.

> Anyway, if you want a goalie for around £1 mill, get Jarstein from Odd (norway). Brillian goalie (in real life as well).

Thanks, I'll be sure to check him out. I usually send the scouts on a
mission to Scandinavia anyway, as you are usually guaranteed a few cheap gems.

I played my first friendly game last night, and drew 2-2 at home to Sparta
Prague. Not a great performance, but I reasonable result for this stage of
the season. I also convinced AC Milan to play a friendly at Upton Park, by
promising them half of the gate receipts. I'm still trying to bring in some
decent coaches, and the training needs a bit of work, but I'm confident of
being able to avoid relegation. Patricio Bengui became my first signing for
£8k. I had him in my Everton game, and he had all the makings of a quality
left-back, so he'll hopefully be pushing Konchesky and McCartney for a place
in the first team soon.

I can't believe four still voted for Italy after all the trouble recently.
I would rule them out of hosting any major competitions until they prove
they can control their own fans.

Shouldn't we be focusing on what sort of beer is on offer. After all,
football fans will eat anything once they've had a session in the local pub.

To be fair, the police only get involved after some sort of disturbance, but
then go on a rampage that would put the Ultras to shame.

According to a recent article in The Times, the Italian police hate
doing football matches because the courts are very biased towards
football fans. Unlike the UK, where hooliganism can land you a hefty
penalty, the courts in Italy tend to let violent football fans off
with not much more than a slap on the wrist. That means that the fans
have little incentive to behave, and for the police the paperwork
invlved in processing an arrest is often barely worth the effort. So
being heavy-handed with the fans is just about their only option, as
arresting the perpetrators is a waste of time. And, because they're
regularly subjected to extreme abuse by the fans, they're only to
ready to dish it out in return if they get a chance.

That's quite interesting, and explains a lot.

Yeah, imagine having to deal with that lot once or twice a week. I bet they
live for the close season.
