No one really knows for sure dude. It will depend on the optimizing of the
game, how NVidia responds with a reengineered driver(s), how many bugs are
left to be squashed, etc. Early release minimum and suggested configs are
simply a rule of thumb and not meant to be absolutes. Forum boards are rife
with complaints over minimum systems still being unplayable once the game
drops. Doom 3 is a great example. It wasn't until the crackers got hold of
the game that true optimization happened. I used the altered configuration
version for quite a while until the quality of the official releases caught
up with what I could do already.
BTW, did you guys feel that D3 (aside from the overuse of darkness) was
pretty much as close to UT99 in game play and "fun factor" as any game?

We all wish we knew. Only the demo will answer that question, and
even then it won't be a definitive answer. I remember all too well
that the UT2004 demo ran great on my (then current) system, but the
released game was a completely different picture. Then it was
revealed that the demo used much smaller textures than the released
game. And unlike UT99, where improved rendering code brought
increases with virtually every patch, UT2004 never really got much
better. Only throwing more hardware (specifically, faster processors)
at it helped.

But if your system *doesn't* run it well, then we're all in trouble.

My current rig is an AMD 3500+ with 1 gig of memory and an aging 6800
GT. I'm thinking I will need an upgrade.

Dunno about that. I played Doom 3. As a matter of fact, I upgraded
video cards due to Doom 3. <g>

I liked it a lot, but I only played through it once and didn't bother
reinstalling it on my latest rig. If I was going to compare it to one
of Epic's titles, to me it would compare a lot closer to Unreal 2,
which I also thought was a good game but only played through it once.

Sorry, I've only ever played games from the UT series (apart from Quake)

Actually Jan and Feb are much worse. The catalogs slow way down for the
Christmas packages and right after the first of the year it's catch up time.
I've been working 55-60 hours every week. Not complaining though. It's good
to have a good job. Not to mention I'm looking at one of those shiny new
quad cores later this year........MMMMmmmmm...quad core....kind of just
"tastes" good to say doesn't it?

It's actually a pretty good middle-class job. We do get OT pay but the
health benefits do it for me. It beats digging a ditch for a living
(something I did for exactly ONE summer)

I'm sure the benefits are excellent. If you don't mind me asking, how
many years have you been with the USPS?

No problem at all. I'm pretty open about stuff. I've been a goverment worker
for right at 20 years, mostly as a mailman but with a stint as a soldier
mixed in to give me "reference" in world views. I left the postal service
because the job was a little too mundane for me as a young lad and I signed
up with the military. In no time at all I was in the first Gulf War and I
saw what people are capable of. I came back to the postal service (gladly)
and I've been aggravating dogs (and pretty girls) for quite a while now.

My last mail carrier had a similar background. He said that his time
in the military counted the same as his postal gig as far as
retirement is concerned. As a matter of fact, he just recently
retired and at a fairly early age. Are you heading down that same
path?

Yeah, pretty much. I like working though so a "retirement age" doesn't
really catch my attention so much, but that may change as I get older.
Honestly I have a really good route, I love where I live and my office is a
good one to work in (there is a long line of transfer requests asking to
come in) so I'm pretty much set up. The money is good and so are the hours
so I am looking a long way down the road at changing anything. Maybe I might
want to go south into California someday, you never know.
So what do you do when you aren't fragging?

Contract programmer specializing in the IBM midrange environment.
AS/400, iSeries, System i... whatever they're calling it these days.
The language used is called RPG. I also do a smattering of PC
programming, but only to support a client that has a point-of-sale
system written in Clipper (an early DOS based language). About 75% of
my time is spent supporting existing "legacy" applications with the
rest of the time doing consulting and new development.

Virtually all of my work is done from my home office. It's a snap to
develop remotely on that platform and most stuff can be worked out
over the phone. I have clients where I haven't been on-site in years.
My client base is varied.... retail, local government (mainly county
tax offices), manufacturing (tool and die, plastic injection molding)
and some medical practices. I have a core base of about 15 clients
with maybe a half-dozen that keep me busy. It's fairly intense work
mentally, so I usually only work about five hours a day. And I work
from home, so that's nice.

The rest of the time I dote on our Shih-Tzu, collect fossils, keep up
with the tech industry and harass people on Usenet.

I'm pretty jealous dude. I'd love to be my own boss. Not sure about doing
programming all day though as I can get really frustrated when it comes to
running down a problem with my computer.

If you like fossil hunting you should see my neck of the woods. In eastern
Oregon there are a bunch of fossil beds and along the coast you can find all
kinds of fossilized wood, shells, etc washed up after storms. I honestly had
to quit collecting stuff because I was running out of room to put it. My
best piece is a megalodon tooth. What's yours?
