There are endless bugs in this game, most of which have been addressed in
patches that are freely available from Balderdash site, Bioware's official
site, and others. I had this particular problem and if you have an
unpatched version of the game, you will need to re-load a saved game from a
time prior to entering the Drow city (if you have one). It sounds to me
like this is your problem because the Matron Mother NPC disappearing is the
classic symptom of this particular bug; it is caused by leaving the Drow
temple (after your party first meets her) to carry out her orders _before_
she has herself had a chance to leave i.e. disappear as if she has walked
off.
In summary, you must go to a website that offers game patches, download and
install the correct patch (which can be confusing - go to Baldurdash not
Bioware because it's clearer) and resume the game from a prior save.
