Perhaps. But "themed" armies last forever.

That is why I have multiple armies to rotate among.

Hey! I resemble that remark.
For pretty much all of 40k3, I played a pretty competitive Eldar army.
From experience, I can tell you that 8 Starcannons would be excessive:
4 Starcannon are plenty enough to do what needs doing.

Erm, I've actually done that to somebody.

Right, but I already *have* an Eldar army. It's old.

That is what I'm doing. I think it will be a *lot* of fun to play, as I
will have a ton of options.

I've played the super-shooty (Chaos) Marines, along with counter-punch
(shooty-biased) Marines, and my opponents started complaining about the
lack of variety. So I got off my duff and finally built the Assault
Marines to "balance" out my Marines.

I assume you've Googled my posts to know that, while I own 6
Wraithlords, I only field 3 at a time.
I have only once fielded all 6. This was against another Eldar player
who fielded 6. And even then, it was only at the request of his
previous opponents, because they wanted me to hammer him down harder
than he hammered them.
('natch, I succeeded on their behalf.)

There actually is such a thing as "too many" Starcannons when it starts
cutting into your army's resilience and flexibility.
Anyhow, I'm not sure that this is all that devastating of an army.
Here's what I'm envisioning to field:
Trait: Blessed Be the Warriors (Elite Furious Assault).
Minor: No Drop Pods / No Allies / No Psykers "restriction".
HQ
.. Master w/ JP, +1A, Lightning Claws
.. Chaplain w/ JP, +1A
Elite
.. 6 Assault Marines w/ JP, Furious, 2 Plasma Pistols, VS w/
Lightning Claws.
2x 6 Assault Marines w/ JP, Furious, 2 Plasma Pistols, VS w/
Power Weapon.
Troops
4x 6 Tactical Marines w/ Las & Plas.
Fast
.. 6 Assault Marines w/ JP, Furious, 2 Plasma Pistols, VS w/
Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield
2x 6 Assault Marines w/ JP, 2 Flamers, VS w/ Power Fist.
This is for 1850 pts. It will have good mobility, momentum, and impact
when it reaches HtH. But it lacks numbers, exacerbated by building
*ALL* squads on 6s, so wounds will be expensive. So there is some
challenge in coordinating the various squads to good effect.
I have *lots* of swap-outs: various HQ, 3 Dreads, Termies, Assault
Termies, more Tacticals, Snipers, 2 Landspeeders, ML & HB Devastators,
and 3 Land Raiders. I can change things up to play different army
styles and try different tactics.
