My dad is 69 and uses flight simulator every day - but has an old computer
that runs TERRIBLY! For his birthday we wanted to get him something big - a
brand new computer system - and get the best we can get with all the bells
and whistles - set up with the primary objective of running fs.
I spoke to Microsoft fs - they can't really make specific recommendations -
suggested I go on here to ask the experts.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

laura,
that's a pretty cool thought for pops.
the first thing that popped in to my fragile mind, computers made by
'Alienware' ,
i think best buy carries them (made for gaming) but thet are pricey.
you would probably want one with a pci express capable motherboard.
the biggeest and baddest processor board will handle with at least 2 gig
memory
a pci express video card with at least 256mg memory on board
at least a 5.1 soundcard
something like this and pops would be ready to go for FsX coming out later
this year.
i hope someone else will chime in,
happy shopping,
craig

Thank you Craig - I really appreciate your help! I've never even heard of
"Alienware" - I'll look at those. I also didn't know about FsX.
Any suggestions on steering column and peddle?
Thanks again!

In addition to what Rob and Craig said, I'd also do a google search for
GoFlight product. Check out CH also for yokes and such. You didn't say
whether your dad was a pilot IRL nor how much $$ you wanted to put out but
all these suggestions should give your dad something he'll enjoy for a long
time. You might want an oxygen bottle handy when he unwrtaps it though. I
know *I'd* need one!
Considering the amount of $$ you'd be spending, you might want to get your
vendor to pre-install FS for you.
HTH,
Vic

Well Ripply didn't mention a budget and I think ripply said "...and get the
best we can get with all the bells
and whistles..." -- that Dell has plenty of bells and whistles.
Maybe Ripply couldn't think it would cost that much Still A LOT cheaper
than flying a real 172 -- even used they go for $142,000 US. and then add
in hanger/stall space, maintenance, min hour requiments to keep your license
active, instrument upgrades, yada yada yada -- so even if one dropped $30K
on a home flight simulation system, it is STILL a lot cheaper than a 172 and
you can flying more than just one aircraft.

That's true, Rob - she DID say "the best". Gee, I have a friend who knows
Michael Dell - wonder if I could promote one of those for "testing"? I

Sorry folks, I need help in just trying to post a question re simulation games.
Sorry to pick on you.
Does Msn Combat FS work on Windows XP, because I always crash with "ialmrn5
driver quit during normal operations. Do I need to load DirectX(which I have
been unable to do) ? Could someone forward this on to an experienced gamer?
thanks

Sorry folks, I need help in just trying to post a question re simulation games.
Sorry to pick on you.
Does Msn Combat FS work on Windows XP, because I always crash with "ialmrn5
driver quit during normal operations' being the error message. Do I need to
load DirectX(which I have been unable to do) ? Could someone forward this on
to an experienced gamer? thanks
Oh,by the way I use a Dell Inspirion 6000 laptop for FS2004 and it works
great...unlike the above. I live near Seattle so I added Megascenery N.W. and
it is terrific. And lastly, A civ type Spitfire proto from on line for $13
but it still has a few
bugs.....Thanks for any replies (check out pcaviator.com)

Laura
I am older than your dad, I use FS every day. My system is great but i didnt
pay a lot for it.
I bought a low-line Dell Desktop for Less than 500...it works fine for FS.
Pent proc,256k, 40MB, cdrom...thats all.
hope this will help.

I use Windows XP with my MS Combat Flight simulator Europe series and also
have Pacific Theatre. It does work on XP but you do have to have Direct X.
I do have a problem with mine however, and hope someone out there will know
how to fix this.
My throttle setting will fall to zero from 100% as I`m taking off or in
flight for no apparant reason. I have to constantly watch the throttle and
reset it. Does anyone know why the throttle setting changes all by itself,
even if I`m not in motion ?
