As I said, I just finished playing FEAR. The first 5/6 of the game
were boring -- a corridor after a corridor after a corridor.
Everything is shades of grey. From time to time, the girl popped up
here and there, which, frankly, made me laugh instead of getting
scraed. She did nothing hurtful to my health, so why should I be
scared of her ? I was bored out of my skull, and thus stretched
playing the game over a year half an hour each time, just to get a
return on the money I spent buying this hyped game.
In the last level or two, the things finally started to get
interesting. The girl turned into a hot nude... mmm, yammy, cann't get
enough of sight of her ! The ghosts started to pop up here and there
among sudden space distortions, which made the game scary (for me !)
and me craving to learn more about what will happen further around the
corner.
I have also got the expansion pack, "FEAR: Extraction Point". I will
install it soon. >> Stay informed about: Just finished playing F.E.A.R. ... |

The combat was unremarkable. When I played on "moderate" settings,
most of the combat was easy. However, sometimes I met large
congregations of the enemies, and that's when the combat became too
hard, so that I died for maybe 5 or 10 times before I switched to the
"easy" setting, and still just got through with a few dieings.
And, the combat, as I just said, is unremarkable. Nothing special.

So no comments about the combat? Yes, the game is corridor after corridor.
But F.E.A.R. is not about the environment, it's about the combat within the
environment. >> Stay informed about: Just finished playing F.E.A.R. ... |

FEAR had and still has some of the best AI in any shooter to date. They will
flank you, throw grenades at you, and don't just stand there while you shoot
them. They take cover and are quick to hide when you start shooting at them.
Did you even use the "slo-mo" control? It makes the game a whole lot more
fun. It's handy to take out the baddies, plus it also looks very cool.
When FEAR came out it was one of those games a lot of gamers couldn't play
well because it took a pretty high end PC to run. But now it's a blast to
play because I can turn everything to Max with 4x AA 8X AF and it looks
great. In FEAR it's all about the lighting, and particle effects. If you
have to turn that stuff down then the game looks pretty bad. But with all
settings maxed it's very impressive, with stuff flying all over the place
and dust so heavy you can't see a foot in front of you (this can be damn
scary when you're in the middle off a heavy fire fight and you can't see
anything!)
I just finished "F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate" last night. Even though it got
low scores by the review sites, I have to wonder how many played the game
all the way to the end. Because the last third is when things get very
intense. And I really enjoyed the new weapons as well as the new enemies.
Some pretty scary stuff during some of the levels. I also enjoyed the game
because it was fairly long, and even though there was a lot of the same
settings used more then twice, there where also a lot of new levels that
were really challenging to fight through. I see the at Amazon you can pick
up FEAR and the two expansion packs for $30. That's a damn good deal.
This is one of those games that if you have upgraded and haven't played
since you did, will really put a smile on your face! JLC >> Stay informed about: Just finished playing F.E.A.R. ... |

Agreed I found the game boring as well. The AI in FarCry was alot harder and
smarter than FEAR.
I see the Platinum Version around with all the expansions included, when
it's $20 or less I'll try it again. >> Stay informed about: Just finished playing F.E.A.R. ... |

As compared to what?
I found the gun battles the best IMO of any FPS but that's just me. >> Stay informed about: Just finished playing F.E.A.R. ... |

I think you mean something different when talking about "combat". To me
(and most other people here?) "combat" in FEAR foremost means the cool
effects that make fighting so intense and I wouldn't call them "bland".
They were only just recently approached by COD4 and Time Shift effects.

I played through the 1st level (i.e., "Interval"). The graphics in the
expansion pack is better than in the original game. The textures are
diverse and better looking, more different colors (not only gray),
more effects (i.e. bugs running from the bloodied corpse). There are
some semi-transparent silver creatures with red heads... creepy... I
am yet to learn what it is. >> Stay informed about: Just finished playing F.E.A.R. ... |

Really? So what was more remarkable about the HL2 combat? And we are not
talking about level design or atmosphere here, where HL2 indeed wins...
