Post subject: Cannot find staircase to Vlad's.

I have been looking all over the levels from 34-42 for the staircase to Vlad's. I have never gotten this far before, so I was wondering if there is a special way to find it? Like you have to search everywhere? I've been reduced to digging all the walls out and checking over every square on some of the levels, to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated!

Vlad's tower is on the 9th to the 13th level of Hell (where the valley
of the dead is the first level). That should narrow your search.

There aren't any special techniques for finding it. ?oMM would have
been a favourite. Check under iterms.

Worst case is, you really have to check *everything*. Think "mimic on
top of the staircase".

Or boulder on top of staircase.

And keep in mind, the stairway to Vlad's can be on a special level,
e.g. Orcustown.

Digging the walls out shouldn't be necessary, as everything should be
accessible to you without digging. Cutting a path here and there can
be convenient, though.

Curious about one thing: if I just get to the level, and haven't
explored it, ?oMM will show a stairs up. But what if I've
already seen the square, with, say, a boulder on it (which, of
course, means that I won't have seen the square). Will a ?oMM
cause the stairs up to appear, or am I out of luck?

Out of luck. On the other hand, its a good use for a cursed scroll of
amnesia, as a last resort.

What about using a crystal ball? I've never tried using one for
staircases, but in theory, it should work. Anyone else tried this?

It doesn't work. "That symbol does not represent an object or monster."

(What theory? Smile Try in Wizmode.

You will get random vague hints about the location of the Oracle,
Medusa, the Castle, and the Wizard's Tower. WRT the subject; you
won't get hints about Vlad. And you won't get stairs disclosed.
