This has likely been asked and answered several times before, but
since I'm a senior, I've forgotten, so here goes:
I want to use a float plane with FSX. How do I get one on the water,
let's say, in Toronto, or even near Toronto?
How do I find a float plane port?
As you are aware, the computer in all its brilliance, puts my float
plane on a runway and no matter how high I rev the engine, I don't
move. I know there must be an aviation rule about float planes (not
amphibs) on runways.

Hi Arthur,
There is several ways that you can go about this. If you have Google
Earth installed on your computer (it's free) then you can use it to search
your area for seaplane bases. Then get the name of a seaplane base, and
create your FSX flight from there. I have noticed that when using FSX, and I
select a seaplane base (SPB) in the state that I live in, and a plane with
floats, that I start on the water automatically. For instance, if I create a
Free Flight, select the deHavilland Beaver on floats, and then select
"Brooks SPB" (S76), then the flight starts with my aircraft already floating
on the water. Another thing that you can do is go to your local pilot shop
and buy whatever the Canadian equivalent is of an "Airport/Facility
Directory" (AFD) for your area. This directory isn't very expensive, and it
lists information for all of the airports in your area. It will also
indicate whether an airport in an SPB, and has water runways. The nice thing
about owning an AFD is that it also lists all of the ICAO codes for the
airports in your area, radio and navigation frequencies, airport elevations,
etc. I find one invaluable, even when I am I am flying the sim. Another
thing that you can do is select your floatplane, then if the program puts
you on a hard runway, just slew the aircraft to the lake or waterway that
you want, make sure that it is in the water (slew it downward until it is on
the surface of the water), then take it off slew while it is in the water
and save your flight right there. When you load that flight next time you
should be still bobbing up and down in the water. Another thing that you can
do is look at the online Map that comes with FSX, and navigate around your
area until you find a seaplane base. Then in Map view, you can drag your
aircraft icon to that seaplane base and start from there.
I think you have to actually select a seaplane base for the program to
start you off in the water. But by slewing the floatplane or using the Map
view to drag your aircraft to wherever you want to start, then taking off of
slew and saving the flight, you can start at whatever lake or waterway that
you want, regardless if there is an "official" seaplane base there or not. I
hope this helps.

I got this from AVSIM
It has over 500 FS9 Seaplane bases
The Author is David Wilson-Okamura

Here is a workaround. Select the default Cessna Caravan (amphibian),
then select Toronto city airport. Take off, remembering to raise the
gear of course, and plonk it down on the piece of water of your
choice. If not exactly in the position you desire, taxi/sail to you
destination. Once there change your aircraft to the float plane of your
choice, save your flight, and hey presto!

Rest assured, John, that I have read many, many excellent posts by
David over the past three years and have found them to be very
helpful.
It was pointed out to me in an earlier post that he had compiled a
list of 500 sea bases for FS9 which is quite a help, but if you notice
in my original post, I was requesting sea bases for FSX, and
therefore, couldn't use David's information. I certainly wasn't
disregarding the suggestion which was kindly made.
Many thanks for your interest, mate. Much appreciated.

SnakeEyes, just North and adjacent to CYTZ in Toronto, is a Marina. (visible
on Google earth and modeled in the FS10, too.)
Not may float bases in the area. You might slew your float plane to the
marina and save the flight for future use.
Here is a screenie and you can see the control tower at CYTZ in the photo.

Very nice, Danny! Thank you very much. I've been having tons of fun
flying the DeHavilland Beaver float plane from Vancouver. Today, I
flew a beautiful flight all the way to Coos Bay, Oregon where I have a
friend. It's a beautiful trip and the Beaver flies like an angel.

Yep! That is the one plane I love to fly in both FS9 and FS10. I tweaked my
aircraft.cfg to increase the horsepower (max_hp=450)
to 750. I can easily cruise at 175 and push it to almost 190 if needed.
Climbs like a dream. Aerosoft did a fantastic job with that bird and it is
very inexpensive. She'll land at about 45kts with the 'barn door flaps'
fully extended. In FS10, there are many, many roads that are landable . . .
just like a true bush pilot sees, so you can set it down almost anywhere.
