| What does everyone here at r.g.r.n. think of gas spores, in addition to
violently exploding upon their demise, releasing a minor lingering stinking
cloud to represent the noxious gas within which had kept the spore aloft on
its trek through the dungeon?

I like it... It could block a corridor for a couple of turns and that
sort of thing. >> Stay informed about: feelin' gassy |

I like the idea, basically; though, instead of a trace of stinking
gas I'd rather prefer a 3x3 area of stinking cloud where it explodes.

Maybe slightly smaller: How about a 3x3 square with the corners cut
off, ie a 5-square cross.
The stinking cloud effect is muchly underused in nethack, imho. I was
trying to locate the "golems and green dragons breathe trails of
stinking cloud" patch a while ago but couldn't locate it. Anyone know
where I should be looking? >> Stay informed about: feelin' gassy |

Indeed, and the scrolls are rare. I used the scrolls occasionally in
crowded areas; Sokoban zoo, Sanctum, etc. If you're not yet skilled
enough or healthy enough to fight a crowd the stinking cloud helps a
lot in weakening the critters first.

Another idea; opening a grave could emit a stinking cloud.
Potions exploding in an alchemy process could stink as well.

Janis,
I've tried to use them a couple of times - I even practiced in wizard
mode to be sure I knew how - and I still ended up smelling rotten eggs
and having no success. It is kind of tricky where you can be standing
and where to center it so you don't zap yourself.

Yes, and it's a pitty that you just lose the scroll instead of being
told that it's too far and are allowed to retry. Here's some data to
consider before applying the scroll... (as far as I read the code
correctly)
Maximum distance to place the target is: dx^2 + dy^2 < 32
(E.g. that is a distance of 5 squares in a straight orthogonal line,
diagonally it's just 3 squares); otherwise you will just smell the
rotten eggs.
The effective cloud radius and damage depends on the BUC status of the
scroll:
radius damage
cursed 2 4
uncursed 3 8
blessed 4 16
The duration of the cloud effect is 4..6 turns.

Your target location has to be lit and in line-of-sight. Seeing the
monster by infravision or telepathy isn't good enough. Even a boulder
in the way will cause the scroll to fail. >> Stay informed about: feelin' gassy |

I like the idea of spores being released leading to temporary blindness,
like an extreme example of what giant puffballs do in the real world.

The good thing here is that your target location doesn't need to actually
contain the monster, since it is an area effect.

Eyes of the Overworld give line of sight through walls. This works
with targeting skilled+ fireball and cone of cold. The Eyes might
work with the Scroll of Stinking Cloud as well.
Thanks to chlorine on NAO for showing me that trick.

Thanks for this whole discussion on use of scrolls of stinking
cloud. I had no idea it had any of those restrictions, and just
dismissed as "dungeon decoration" the "rotten eggs" smell
messages, figuring my target was too resistent when the
scroll failed. Knowing how to make them work reliably might
even make them worth writing or worth a wish.
