Does it make a difference if you feed your pet a lot of food at once, or
is that just wasting it until the first piece takes effect?

I never tried feeding a lot at once. My guess is that
the game won't let you (either you can't do it, or the
first action gets cancelled).

If you have decent food (35 happiness on each tick) then
it doesn't take long. As soon as m pet's happiness hits
yellow, a single good fish can bring him to max.

Yes that is wasting it alot, do that at high level and it will cost you a
fortune.
When you feed your pet it gets a buff called Pet feed effect, this lasts for
about 10 seconds, you can check the combat log to see how much happiness he
is getting.

Usually the food has to be within 20 levels of the pet to give it max
happiness 35 per tick.

When you feed it multiple times you are just restarting the buff from 0
seconds, so if the buff lasts for 10 seconds you might get 15 seconds of
feeding time, because feeding him 5 pieces of food isn't instant (the time
it takes you to click the icon, or drag it from your bag)

Infact feeding him multiple times you may get less happiness than feeding
him once, as you may keep feeding him inbetween a tick of happiness so it
goes back to the start.

If you feed him 5 pieces and wait for the buff to go off then you get 50
seconds of the Pet feed effect buff. Although you would probably never feed
him 5 times in a row unless its +17 happiness food and hes really unhappy.

Don't feed your pet again until the first feed buff ends. There are two
ways to see check a feed buff for completion: 1. watch the combat log; 2.
place your mouse pointer on your pet's portrait to see if the bone icon has
disappeared.

switch to the combat log and wait until it finishes gaining happiness from
the feed effect before you feed it again unless its a green happy smile it
doesn't need more - but still give it something every 5-10 minutes or as you
see fit.

Thanks guys! I never realized you could look at the combat log and
actually see the amount of happiness the pet was getting!

No, it's only maxed out when the feed pet effect messages show
that the pet isn't getting anymore happiness. Ie, it may show
35, 35, 35, 26, 0, 0, or something like that.

Feeding a pet again before the 'pet feed effect' wears off (10 ticks over 20
seconds, less if your pet reaches full happiness before the effect has run
it's normal course) is just wasting food.

A decent quality food (that which gives your pet 35 happiness per tick (350
happiness total) - check your combat log) will take a pet from "just" yellow
all the way to full happiness. If you're using a lower quality food (17
happiness per tick), it's gonna take 2 feedings, but you must let the first
feeding finish before starting the second.

So once it turns green, does it help to feed it again, or is it maxed out?

Thanks. One last thing...is there a way to show this message in the
general chat window? I see it in the combat log, but I can't find the
proper option to turn on to show it in general.

Thanks.

As I said, it takes a full feeding to take a pet to full green from "just"
yellow... In other words, it's happiness has only turned from green to
yellow in the last minute or so.

While I don't believe you can add that to the combat log, you do know
you can separate the combat log from the general window to see both at
once, right?
That's usually the 1st thing I do when starting a new char.
I keep chat window on the bottom left and combat window on the bottom
right by the bags.
That way I get all the information I need and can size them
individually.

Yeah I meant general, sorry.
Anyway, since I'm not sure of how to add things to general, to
separate the combat log just Left click on the Combat tab and drag it
wherever. That will separate it from general.
One thing though, it has occurred to me that I have never tried to put
them back together, as such I assume you can but am not sure how.

i'm aware of this option, but not how to do it Smile i'm sure it's a matter
of right-clicking and finding it in the list though

You're wasting food.

1) Feeding your pet starts up the "Feed Pet Effect" buff.

2) While the buff is active (6 ticks of 3 seconds each), your pet
gains Happiness each tick.

3) How much Happiness is gained each tick depends on what sort of food
you feed to the pet.

4) Feeding the pet again before the buff has expired resets the tick
counter to zero, so any unused ticks are lost.

Also, it's not possible to feed the pet beyond its maximum Happiness,
so after a while the pet won't gain more Happiness no matter how much
food you feed it.

Cheers - Ian
