Hi all,

For years now I've been looking for a fantasy wargame to suit my needs.
I've tried a few and read the rules to many others but cant seem to
find the right one.

I have spent lots on scenery and have lots of miniatures for RPG's and
looking for a skirmish based battle system.

25mm, Skirmish level, each model is an individual fighting figure.
But, not detailed characters and I want about 40-50 models per side to
take an evening of play.

So, all that army stuff with units and figures in formation is a no-no.

Anybody any suggestions?

Paul

I hate to say it but Warhammer - yes that game that the whole of the GDW
shops are geared to these days - is a likely candidate. Not too fantasy
orientated in terms of magic though. I actaully hate Warhammer becuase since
that came out GDW shops have got really boring to go into.

Yeah,

Warhammer is the one that keeps cropping up. The reason I keep
avoiding it (and I may be wrong here) is that I want full flexibility.
I have dozens and dozens (and with the new D&D mins), hundreds of
minis. I would like to be able to use whichever ones I wanted and
possibly even design my own. From what I remember, WFB did have a
points buy system, so you just have to stick with the army lists it
gives you.

Second point - the army lists. I dont want to buy countless expansions
to get the stat cards for lots of different figures. Again, I may be
wrong on this.

Third, and back to my flexibiliy thing, I seem to remember you bought
things in units, for example - 6 Bretonnian knights. Lets say I have 5
nicely painted knights all ready to go. I want to be able to use them,
or just 2, and so on. Not sure if I can.

Fnially, I've always preferred systems which are move tactical with the
movements, Warhammer is you move all your units, then I move mine.
Lots of downtime for the non-moving player. I prefer ones where player
A activates a unit, then player B and so on.

Any other suggestions most welcome...

Paul

That's really good to know. Now, if I can get my group off of DBA for a
moment, maybe we'll get to pull it out... <grin> Thanks for the info.

If you were going for GW gaming then LoTR is more skirmishy than WFB.
You want alternative or card based activation really though....

Hi Paul

Reaper used to have a game out called Apocalypse. What made this game
unique is that you could individually design every single figure in your
army. You could take as little or as long as you wanted designing your
army.

It played well and I rather liked it but for some reason Reaper suddenly
dropped it and went over to making their new system called Warlords (I
think?).

I have no idea if Warlords has the versatility that Apocalypse had but
if Reaper dropped Apocalypse to release Warlords then it's probably
worth a look.
