Here's a small list...
Talisman (really out of print?)
Zargos
Kalahen (included 6 miniatures I still use for DnD)
Settlers of Catan (more medieval than fantasy but very good!)
Settlers of Catan Card Game (more fantasy with wizards & dragons
add-on)

I never played the Advanced version but the basic version had a serious
problem where once the players caught on to the tempo of the game there
was no challenge. They just sliced through everything like clockwork.
We played a few times until my group discovered it and then no one
wanted to play any more. >> Stay informed about: The best fantasy board games |

I loved talisman! I occassionaly look around to see if I can find it
anywhere, but never do.

Never heard of it.

Never heard of it.

Never played it, but it looks pretty cool.
I liked
Dungeon! quite a bit. Still have that.
There was also a game called something like King of the Castle or
whatnot that was in a Dragon magazine I rather liked.
Also if you are draging in card games, you have to mention Magic the
Gathering. Nuclear War, Illuminati, and Munchkin all really great card
games as well. If it weren't for not wanting to have to 'keep up with
the jones' I'd probably play Mt:G still, but the collectable side just
soured me eventually.
I recently bought Zombie Graveyard or something like that. You get 4
wind up zombies, who you get to wind so many times before letting them
go on thier way, which is influenced by cards you get. Awful game.
played it 2x lasted about 2 turns each time.
I'd like to try HeroQuest or MageKnight, both look fairly interesting.
For non fantasy themed games, I rather like Cranium, but it's only good
for playing through 2 or 3 times, before it starts getting repetative. >> Stay informed about: The best fantasy board games |

Runebound, 2nd Edition. I have not played all the expansion variants yet,
but it rocks.

IMHO MK Dungeons is a LOT better than the base game and fixes many of
the playability problems of base MK, especially if you play it
cooperative versus a DM. >> Stay informed about: The best fantasy board games |

I thought 4th edition was still in print.
Much different from 1st and 2nd though.

Avoid MageKnight if you don't like collectible games.
Though it might be ok to play with a small investment among a group of
friends. >> Stay informed about: The best fantasy board games |

In fact, you would probably be better off playing the D&D Miniatures
skirmish game. At least then your minis could serve double duty.

Point.
And to elaborate further, I didn't like Mage Knight but like the D+D
mini's rules. Down side is I know a lot of MK players but no D+D mini's
players. My main gripe with MK was that only a few of your figures act
each turn. So you can theoretically go through a whole game playing
only half your force. The problem is even worse in HeroClix. I also
didn't like having to guess ranges in MK (which isn't a problem in HC).
When D+D mini's first came out I described it in reviews as "MageKnight
without the annoying stuff." >> Stay informed about: The best fantasy board games |

Mageknight: Dungeons is a good dungeon crawl. And it has the bonus
of being competitive. Each player gets a "heroic team" and a pool of
monsters to set out. Then they invade a dungeon and see who can make
it thru and out with the most treasure. It even has interactive treasure
chests with traps. And with expansions it has its own tiles and traps.
Heroscape is good as a war-type game. Simple but strategic. Or if
you like a bit more depth to a game, Mageknight (not the dungeons)
game is good.
World of Warcraft boardgame is a good team vs team game based on
the MMORPG game. It is made by the same people that make Descent.
Speaking of which, Descent is a good dungeon crawl in the tradition of
Diablo.
Heroquest and Advanced are good dungeon crawls, as was WarhammerQuest.
Muchkin is a cardgame of exploring, exploiting, and extreme goofiness.
You each play as a character in a group trying to make it thru the
"adventure"
and getting all the "Phat Loot" you can. 1st one to lvl 10 wins!
Knights of the Dinner Table: Hack card game is a great game, but each player
has to buy a deck for $12.00. You play one of the KoDT and investigate a
dungeon while trying to get and attach the legendary Hand of Vecna to your
body. Dungeoneer is the same type of game, but you get by with 1 double
sized $20.00 deck.
I could keep going on and on, but a look at www.boardgamegeeks.com will
give you a better list with much better descriptions.

That's come up a couple of times and I really enjoyed it too.
But some of the rules could get a little involved or non-intuitiuve.
Though when AH started doing computer games this was one I really hoped
they'd translate as a computer would take all of the busy work out of it.
It wouldn't be a hard game for someone to write up in Basic or C or
whatever, just a fairly long project for a hooby. If I had a system
that was up to it and the skills I used to, I probably would have done
it by now. Along with FGU's Star Explorer. I would also have liked to
see SPI's Freedom in the Galaxy get a computer treatment to remove the
tedium. And the dungeon tile maze games from SPI would be nice too. >> Stay informed about: The best fantasy board games |
