Longer than a week - I tried checking my main a few days after
Christmas only to learn that he couldn't be displayed because he'd
been inactive for a while (which, at the time of the attempted check,
had been about 10 hours).

It was also around this time that my server started having problems
with BGs - instance not found, freezing at the loading screen, etc.
One time I got stuck in EotS after the battle ended. "Leave
Battleground" didn't work, /afk didn't work, trying to Log Out didn't
work, couldn't Hearth, got invited to a party and a Warlock tried to
summon me - couldn't, tried Auto Unstick - cannot do that while
stunned. No reply form GM. I was there for 50 minutes before I alt-
tabbed out and shut the game down.

This past weekend I got Feared at the BS in AB. I trinketed just as I
fell over the "cliff" - and descended into nowhere. I kept falling
until my Elf was no longer on the screen. There was a blue horizon,
and when I scrolled up I saw a large black square. On the AB map the
silver circle that was me kept moving north until I was off the map. I
suppose I could have /afked, but I didn't want a deserter debuff, and
we were almost at the end.

This past Saturday I had Authentication problems.

Wonder if the servers are melting.

Do you suppose it has something to do with the fact that they've just done
rolling restarts the past couple of weeks due to the holidays?

I suppose that theory doesn't work because the EU servers have had normal
maintenance--or have they?

Not the same but similar situation:

Yesterday on Dragonmaw EU there was some really annoying lag on item server
(several seconds to loot mob, pick up mail or bid on AH, one of my bids even
took long enough for me to make tea before it was accepted). Also BGs went
crazy (over usual AV lag there was trouble with getting into it - people
being ported to nonexisting instance, disconnections on port, dropping from
queue etc. until Blizz decided to close BGs in general - there is even
announcement on realm status).
Since I did all usual daily quests, couldn't go to BGs and did not want to
go to normal instance because of probable server restart (there was even
appropriate SERVER message but finally nothing happened), I decided I'll go
test my luck with Ragglesnout in RFD. (I want his belt for my lvl39 warrior,
so I go there as a priest, scan instance with Mind Vision and in case I spot
him I'd call my brother to keep and clear the instance for me, while I relog
on warrior and get there. So far I had two chances for the belt but no luck,
only his shield dropped). So I went there and did the scan, but no sign of
the boar. When I was exiting RFD for the fifth time I got stuck on loading
screen - progress bar filled up, but after ~7 mins of waiting I was still on
loading screen. All I could do was to kill WoW.
At first I tried to relog without doing anything - stuck.
Removed "Cache" folder - stuck.
Moved "WTF" and "Interface" out of WoW, removed "Cache" once again - stuck.
So I copied "WTF" and "Interface" back, logged to warrior and created ticket
(where I wrote what I did and that removing folders does not help).
I queued for AB but BGs were still down, so I went to Gnomeregan to get some
weapon skillups (mobs are gray for me there, but tough enough so I don't
oneshot them, immunity to rend on most of them helps since failed rend uses
barely any rage and therefore I can spam it speeding up skillups; I already
have 190+/195 on everything except 2h swords and ranged, yey Surprised) ).
In the meantime BGs went up and I was ported. Just at the start GM contacted
me and asked to try to relog on priest. I did that with no luck. Back to
warrior I found a GM mail stating that my problems are due to addons -
grrr - I wrote I tried that before making ticked, ### Blizz!!!
Next ticket and next contact with GM - this time he said it is a server wide
problem and I should try in an hour. Since it was late I just logged out
after a while and tried today morning - still stuck on loading screen. I
wonder what would be their next version (I'll see tonight). I even suggested
that maybe moving my priest to some known location would help (she is listed
without location on character selection page).
I wonder if it is something with RFD. I already had problems with it
previously (like two weeks ago) - when I reached instance per hour limit I
was disconnected immediately. It happened each time I tried to enter too
many RFDs, but never in any other instance.

Blizzard customer service is pretty much just like any other customer
service.

Actual problems are not related to them quickly. Sudden problems such
as this that effect everyone are outside the realm of "delete your
WTF and interface folder" and "your problem is an addon related issue"
answers that probably do answer about 90% of the problems they are
contacted with. So, when a problem like this does pop up, at first
you will get the standard responses, as you had mentioned, followed
later by "this is a server side problem, there is no ETA on a fix"
answer, also as you had mentioned.

I really don't miss working in customer service.

We've had rolling restarts as well, I believe.

Update:
They fixed it finally and I can login normally, but one of the in game mail
I received is so weird that I thought I'll share:
"Greetings.
We are writing to notify you that we are unable to change the name of your
character login issues with Miosha to any of the names which you requested,
as none of these are available. Please first review our naming policy:
<link> and then submit another help petition with at least four alternative
names. (...)"
Where the hell did I ever request name change and what it even means "the
name of your character login issues"??? Sheesh...

When this happens, this is one way to escape:

Get a friend to invite you to a party.

Then have Them join a battleground (WSG/AB/EotS) using the 'join as
group' option. This will queue you for the battleground as well.

The friend can then leave the party and/or the queue if they want.

When the battleground starts, you'll be summoned to the new
battleground instance.

I forgot to note - it will have to be a different battleground from
the one you are stuck in, and it can't be AV, as you can't 'join as
group' for AV.
