Archived from groups: alt>games>fallout (more info?)

I went back to replay Fallout 1 the other day, and it occured to me how
much better it'd be on the Fallout 2 engine. There aren't many
differences, I know, but the little things like the item move limit get
annoying quickly.

So has anyone tried playing/porting the Fallout 1 files in Fallout 2?
With the games so similar, I'd expect very few changes necessary, if
any. The biggest change I can think of is the way party NPCs are
handled, and even that could probably left how it is.

Don't they use the same engine anyway? Personally I'd like to see both games
done in the FOT engine. The combat in FOT is more indepth (e.g. different
prone positions) and the graphics are better.

The engine is almost the same. The thing is, Fallout 1 is still a great
game, and the only complaints I may have with it are a few parts of the
engine that were changed for Fallout 2. The problem with FOT is the game
is so different, it would take a lot of effort to port the data over. My
hope is that because F1 and F2 are so similar it may be possible to
essentially just copy the F1 dat into the F2 install and play the
original game on the updated engine. The more work it takes, the less
likely it is to happen.

So does anyone have enough experience with mods and the Fallout data to
know what kind of work this would take? I don't even know how to load a
map beside the original game in Fallout 2.

Blah those engines. I want a new 3D engine, or let them use Valve's. A
complete remake of part 1 and 2 and decent sequel each year. Oh well.

I am guessing that you haven't gone here:

http://www.nma-fallout.com/

or here:

http://www.duckandcover.cx/

This would be a start.

I don't have a clue about the worth of the modding threads, but the
links to other FO sites may be the single best reason to check NMA and
DAC out.

The news of both sites covers FO related clones that plan using
different game engines.

There are more than a few European groups soldiering bravely on a muddy
long march to a FO mod, and if English is your only significant
communication language, some have English pages.

You may find more like minded persona's at:

http://www.rpgcodex.com/

At least cruising their news may lead you to other RPG genres.
