Do most of you guys use enchanted weapons a lot?
I carry a couple around with me (primarily for use against ghosts and
similar) but I rarely actually use them. The main reason is because it takes
such a small amount of time to discharge them completely.
Recharging them seems to require either a merchant (who wants a lot of
money), a varla stone (of which there aren't all that many to be found) or
creatures trapped in soul gems (which for the more powerful weapons only
partially recharges them anyway).
I've retrieved several sigil stones, and every time I've chosen to add a
"constant effect" to a ring/amulet. In addition to the need to recharge
enchanted weapons, it also means I can't repair them when they get damaged
(my armourer skill is only in the mid-40s at present).
Does anyone else feel the same way? Or am I missing something obvious?

There are a number of ways to deal with this. First there is the mod
way:
1. There is a mod that greatly reduces the recharge cost charged by the
mages guild.
2. There is a mod that gives all preexisting enchanted items infinite
charges. (This does NOT work on items you create using a sigil stone or
enchanting station.)
Then there is the way the game WANTS you to do it.
1. I find Varla stones far too rare and valuable to waste them
recharging a weapon. Seems like an obscene waste of such a rare relic.
2. Get Azura's star. Its a reusable soul gem. Now capture a soul, any
soul. Refill your weapon, capture another, do it again. If you are
constantly capturing souls you can keep your weapon in charges pretty
easilly. Especially once you top level 15 and most things you come
across (in Oblivion at least) are greater souls.
I prefered the enchantment method in Morrowind. The idea that an
enchanted item can run out of charges doesnt' jive with my concept of
"how things should be". So I use the two mods listed above and have
Azura's star. If I'm using a created magic item I'll use the star to
keep it charged, otherwise all pregenerated enchanted items STAY that
way. Some folks will find that a cheat, however, its a single player
game you get to decide what is a cheat and what makes your game more
enjoyable. Mix and match solutions as desired.

I tend to stay away from enchanted weapons too. Alchemy is better. I agree
with you about the recharging thing - it makes them only worthwhile for
things that need magic/silver/daedric weapons to kill. I just got a daedric
longsword, nice. I want a daedric bow.
as an aside - how come most of the good weapons I find are 'blunt' is what I
want to know.

I think a lot of this depends on what level you're at. When you reach a
higher level, I've found magic weapons to be a necessity. I carry
around three or four swords and three bows and cycle through them until
they are all just about all out of charges, then use a single Varla
stone to recharge all 6 or 7 items at once. If you do a lot of
exploring and are at a high level, there are dozens of ruins to
investigate where you can get Varla stones. I think I had 12 or 13
collected before I decided I'd done enough exploring Some ruins
don't have any Varla stones, but I know of at least 3 ruins that had 3
stones each... I didn't start using soul gems until I got Umbra, but by
that time, I'd come across 50 or so soul gems. Needless to say, I have
no problem recharging weapons now

Not all enchanted weapons run out of charge that quickly. I have two that
both have over 100 uses to a charge. And one of them, the ever handy Umbra
short sword, also traps souls when used, so it fills up your gems as you use
it. Umbra is also a very powerful weapon on it's own, in addition to it's
soul capture capability.
When wandering the countryside just exploring or taking the scenic route
because you didn't wish to fast travel, it's the perfect weapon to have
ready for those unexpected encounters with wolves, bears, etc. And it only
takes a single hit with Umbra to trap the soul. You can switch weapons and
finish off the more pesky ones with something else to save on charges, if
you wish.
Umbra is relatively easy to get if you are above level 7. But there is
that added need to keep buying soul gems. Azura's Star eases that burden a
little bit, but when you carry 5 or 6 enchnated weapons, it's never enough
by itself.

For me, they have been a necessity since level 2 or 3 when I got the Goblin
Totem Staff. Even before I knew how to refill it, this became my favorite
weapon, and is still my standby everyday weapon at level 24, even though I
now have 5 or 6 other enchanted staffs, Umbra, and a Katana that drains
health(love the effect!). Not sure I could have made it this far without
them all.

Yeah, I have a bow I made with a Sigil Stone that does that.
I love the fact that you can make your own magic weapons with Sigil
Stones and then call 'em whatever silly name you want. My standard
weapon of choice is a dagger that absorbs 30 points of health per blow.
I called it "GiveMeHitPoints"

True, this has been such a long standing TES tradition I didn't even
think to mention it. None of my characters would even dream of
capturing a humonoid soul, they'd be sickened at the thought of it.
(Well one of them might consider it but I havn't played her much)
However making DREMORA require a black soul gem is different than
previous (i believe) and confused the heck out of me for awhile.

Ah, worthy note. Things that USED to be humonoid but arent anymore
(like ghosts or skeletons or zombies) CAN be captured in regular soul
gems.
