It's scary. I think we were safe enough during the cold war! I don't
know what is so radically different in our current situation that calls
for all these new powers and I fear it is just a bunch of politicians
with nothing to do.. so they start drafting new laws to 'make the public
happy'.

Yep.
....for so long, there's been a nebulous, ever-changing War... first the
Cold War, then the War on Drugs, then the War on Poverty at some point which
quickly shifted back to the War on Drugs when it backfired so horribly that
almost everyone could see it, and now the War on Terror... all the
restrictions which have nothing to do with what they're supposed to be
guarding against... [cue example about mandatory ID cards when the relevant
terrorists whom they're being imposed 'because of' had valid ID']
Argh.

Look, there are certain mistakes... you only get the chance to do once,
