He was a researcher at Elcomsoft <http://www.elcomsoft.com/apdfpr.html>
that broke the protection in the DRM format of Adobe Acrobat Reader. He
went to the US for a speech the security of this on Defcon and got
arrested by the FBI because of this. I think he got off free, but I have
the feeling that things will only get worse in the near future Sad

I used to be a software cracker in the MS-Dos days you know, I
sympathize with people who 'improve' software by removing annoying
protections (mainly manual protections and floppy protections in those
days).

No, the cheese is real because your mind makes it real. I think that is
what Jim is trying to say here.

There was CopyIIPC of course, which meant you didn't have to crack it
(until you only had 3 1/2" drives). But mainly these protections would
work with weird settings for floppy parameters and e.g. alternatingly
formatting with 7 and 9 sectors per track.

All in all, the game would boot from the boot record of your floppy,
then alter the drive parameters and load some more. Then do a check on
another track that diskcopy wouldn't copy to see if the floppy was still
there.

The floppies made funny noises too! like <tactactactac grrr grrr
tactactactac>.

I managed to get e.g. J-Bird from 5 1/4 to a zip file and it would work!
Even with highscores (very tricky) and monochrome screens.. I'll post it
as an attachment <looks evily at emmel>.

Ah the good old Days Wink
