In morrowind you can drop your stuff, everywhere you want by dragging....
How can I do that in oblivion?

You can't. Sad The system for item placement was changed to use the
"nifty" new physics engine and it makes item placement MUCH harder.

There is the defaul shift+click to just toss thing out of your
inventory. Good for dropping things quickly. You can then move them
by "grabbing them iwth the z key and dragging them around with your
mouse.

Or, open your inventory and click and drag an item out of it (into the
space off to the side). This is VERY picky. You can't do it standing
close to just about anything. The interface seems to need a lot of
"room" around your character, you'll get a message if that's the case.
Once it works you'll have the item in drag mode and can move it around
as you like. However, you're still not clicking to place you're
dragging.

I can't tell you how many times I've knocked all the books off a
stacking trying to adda new book to it, or just walking by the bloody
thing. The physics engine is fun for fights but I WISH there were a
way to disable it when placing housing items. Sad

(Yeah I'm a pack rat and a collector. In Morrowind I had a house with
an entire room dedicated to book shelves. Never once sold a book, just
built an amazing library. i can't figure out how to stack books in a
book shelf in this game without making the the other books EXPLODE out.
heh)

In Oblivion, you do this by going into your inventory, and holding the
left mouse button down. That will have the item floating in front you,
right on your cursor. You then and move it up and down into position.

You need to make sure you don't have anything right in front of your
cursor when you do this. It's still as clumsy as ever...and with the
new physics, its even more so. It'd be nice if they made a mod that
allowed more precise placement of items.

What's worse is when something doesn't drop correctly. For instance,
there's a piece of heavy, dwarven armor that I acquired. It's called
the Curiass of Battle, or something like that. Well, when I drop it,
it just hangs in midair at chest level as though it's on a manequin or
something. I can't select it or pick it up. Unfortunately, I didn't
save the game when I had it in my inventory, so it was lost forever.

I "cheated" and used player.additem to get it back. I saved, and then
tried to drop it somewhere else with plenty of room around me. It did
the exact same thing. I really don't mind it hanging in mid air, but
what upsets me is that I couldn't grab it or anything.

My point: quicksave before dropping stuff.

Anyone else notice how SLIPPERY the floor is in Oblivion. In Morrowind
I used to lean things up against the walls all the time. I've tried
this iwth Oblivion and things just slide down and clatter on the floor.
Can't seem to just prop something up in a corner.

Its like there is no friction in Tamriel. I'm wondering if this is
something modders can control?

Using the controls specified in the Inventory menu section of the
manual.

I love the physics engine while out fighting, sooo fun to explode
skellies with fireballs and dislodge gems with arrows. But while
arranging my house it would be nice if I could enter a "freeze" mode
where things would ONLY move if I did so specifically so I could stack
books without scattering them everywhere. Or fill a bowl with fruit.
Sort of sill to send a big silver bowl flying while trying to put one
little blackberry in it. Wink

Yep, physics are fun.

I think it's a bit silly to decorate a house in a game, but it's also
cool that a game world can be complex enough to allow different people
to enjoy it on different levels. I mean, if you wanted to, a nice
living could be made picking plants and mushrooms to sell.
