I was just playing half life 2 and thought what a great idea it would be to
have a first person adventure game with that kind of engine, the player
could have free run of a 'world' and go around interacting with characters
and solving various puzzles, what you all think?

_Sentinel_ also used a 3D engine, like _Myst 5_.

Graphically I like the effect. In terms of game mechanics, it doesn't
really add anything to the panning adventure games we've had for a
decade.

A 3D engine would make it easier to have NPCs moving around the world.
(Neither Myst nor Sentinel did much with that.) However, that's also
possible with the hybrid third-person adventure game engines like
_The Longest Journey_.

I was thinking more of an adventure game in the traditional sense but from a
first person perspective. So imagine exploring monkey island from a first
person perspective, you'd still have the dialogs between characters and you
could still pick objects up and use them on other objects and solve all the
puzzles but it would be from a more realistic perspective. See where I'm
coming from?

The later Tex Murphy games were like that, and for the technology of the day,
were very successful. I've been trying to get them running on Windows2k or
later, and it's been well...painful to say the least.

Somehow I just can't see playing Monkey Island from the first person
perspective. I want to see Guybrush on the screen.

What about betrayl at krondor? That was a great adventure game. Also,
Gabriel Knight 3 used a 3-D engine.

Sure. Almost everything has already been done.

Three of the five Tex Murphy games, as mentioned by someone else.
The Journeyman Project series.
Dark Side of the Moon.
The Vampire Diaries.
And probably many other 1st-person games that I I will remember
tomorrow. Smile

PS: Yep, I remembered a few more:
The Space Bar.
Many games by the wonderful company Legend, such as Callahan's
Crosstime Saloon.
Titanic: Out of Time
And how about The X Files...

Outcast [1999, Appeal] is kind of like that except it has a
third-person perspective. You have freedom to run and jump around the
gameworld, but dialogue and puzzles are part of the gameplay. Well..
puzzles from an action-orientation. I don't remember having to connect
different colored wires or follow a musical scale anywhere in the game;
otherwise, I think Outcast might offer what you're envisioning. What
has bothered me most though is that Outcast despite its numerous
adventure elements is an action game at heart still.

The OP said "first person" in the thread title, but what he wrote in his
post was "first person adventure game with that kind of engine," referring
to Half Life 2 as an example. And there aren't too many adventure games
that use real time 3D.

True, but in that case he should not have said:

"I was thinking more of an adventure game in the traditional sense but

because that has absolutely nothing to do with 3d.
