Post subject: don't get divorced...
Archived from groups: alt>games>warcraft (more info?)

My wife got divorced a few years ago and married me, hehe. She and
her ex-husband had 2 separate WoW accounts, but both were registered
in his name. They amicably divorced, so no problems there. She now
"owns" one of the accounts. Of course, blizzard doesn't understand
this.

Recently after some fishiness with the guild bank she put in a ticket
to recover some items that had simply disappeared from it (null
username with the guild master rank had taken things out, was very
weird). Her account was locked since it may have been an account
breach (a fact we don't think is plausible) and now we're having
trouble getting it unlocked because it's in her husbands name...

I wasn't aware that her email address on the account was really old,
and that she hadn't updated it, and in fact it's plain just a dead
email.

Obviously per the ToS it's against the rules for her to be playing on
an account with her ex-husbands name on it. But, does she have any
recourse to get her account back? Surely a company such as blizzard
understands the grayness of this area and won't just make her start
over (multiple 70s, good gear all around, large time and fun
investment in these toons)... Even if we can get the account
unlocked, is there any possible way to make it her account
officially? I understand the need to lock things down like this, but
there really ought to be a way to properly transfer ownership of an
account without the worry of the names being different... Can her ex-
husband fax or call blizzard and say, "Look, it's not my account
anymore. Please change the name so it is her account officially."

I dunno, just a strange situation and we're fairly taken aback that a
company such as blizzard may not work with us.

Do you guys know of anything we can do? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

That's the thing, the ex-husband didn't do anything to it. It was
just some weirdness with the gbank that we brought to blizz's
attention. We have the CD key and all the CDs. The ex would get in
touch with blizz if he has too to straighten it out.

When you say transfer the 70s off if we get the account back, how does
one do that?

For instance:

The name on the account is John Smith
her old name is Betty Smith
her new name is Betty Jones

She'd have to create her own account under the name Betty Smith,
transfer the toons she wanted onto it off the old account. Then could
she change the name on the account (what I thought was impossible) to
Betty Jones?

If that's the case then that's 100% fine. Smile Thanks for giving us a
ray of hope. It's weird to think that we're bummed about her losing
her toons, but it's the time investment that we use to have fun every
night. That and the social aspect. We're in a guild of all our RL
friends, so to not be able to log on and chat even if we don't have
anything to do is a real bummer. Not that we couldn't just start her
over, but I just don't think we should have to.

Anyway, thanks again, you've given us a small ray of hope that we'll
be able to figure it all out. Smile

Yeah, this is the plan tonight. Smile

And we're the one paying for the account, not him. I agree with
ScratchMonkey, however. We're paying for the account despite the fact
that it's in his name. So by closing the account... you're losing a
revenue source.

I'll be sure to let you guys know how it goes tonight, hehe.

Hey ya'll, this is Michaels wife. Thanks for all the advice, hopefully
I'll have my account back soon. I just wish Blizz would have some sort
of system, however ridiculous, for married couples to transfer account
ownership. I've known about this since I got the account but there was
never anything I could do, aside from hope I never had a problem. I've
played since the game was released and have countless hours of effort
and attachment to my toons and my friends in game. Michael and I even
met in game so that should tell you how dedicated I am hehe.

Anyways, wish us luck! We'll let you know how this shakes down.

Tough one, she should have got the name changed at the divorce really but in
all honesty it's hardly a priority, is there a reason the Ex is cancelling
the account??

If you get the account back and it has like 2 or 3 decent 70's on it, I
would suggest doing a transfer keeping the surname the same as pre married
but once the accounts are moved he cannot get his claws into it. If you look
at it in Blizz eyes, she could be a sour wife trying to rip off her ex
husband as she knows he loves his WOW, so unless you have some way of
proving she has been playing the game on your IP range and you get a letter
from the EX with a copy of CD key etc then you are pretty screwed.

Good luck, Blizzard are not known for their compassion unfortunately Sad

Simplest solution will be to find out why the account is locked, I would
imagine they have reset the password and sent the new password to the
registered email address which you no longer have access, best course of
action is contact blizz, get them to change email address on account, they
may need your wife's ex to do this, once you have a new email address get a
new password sent.

Then contact blizz about changing names on account, they will need to see
marriage certificates etc, they are quite strict on the rules.

Seems like the critical identity should be the billing info, not one's
username and magic question. Shouldn't it be sufficient to prove that
you're the one with the credit card used to pay for the account?

And if people say it's impossible to change names, this post might help,
although changing a Christian name may be hard work, unless maybe your a
transsexual or some sort of cross dresser Smile

Ok, we got it all straightened out. I called as the ex-husband and it
turns out the account wasn't locked at all. Nor had the password
changed (despite the fact that she couldn't log in...) We got the
email fixed and a new password sent, so now we're good to go. Smile

Thanks all! Smile
