Anyone have any interesting suggestions on how to dig up some new players in
an area where there are no gaming stores and people actually say things
like, "that D&D is a bunch of devil worship stuff and we shore don't wan't
none o' that 'round here."
Ah, DFW.
I recall one of you is from the Corpus Christie area. Is it better out that
way? >> Stay informed about: Where to dig up new players? |

I play over the internet. It's insanely slow, but it works in the end. >> Stay informed about: Where to dig up new players? |

Well, since you worship the devil anyway, take up Necromancy and "dig up"
a few zombie players!
Just KIDDING!
Try some of the online game tables. I also was in gamer limbo for quite a
while
before finally getting some players in the area. >> Stay informed about: Where to dig up new players? |

Try this place: http://www.campusgaming.org/
It's the page for the Campus Gaming Association, based at the
University of Texas at Dallas. Looks like they invite participation
from non-students, as well.
Otherwise, try haunting places where gamers hang out. Coffee houses,
bookstores (Borders, Half-Price Books), etc.
Finally, be on the lookout for conventions, of which Dallas has a
number. Of particular note is Project: A-Kon which happens every
summer (http://www.a-kon.com/). You just missed this year's shindig,
but it might be worth hanging out on the forums to get plugged in.
Another that I'm less familiar with is FenCon
(http://www.fencon.org/links.html), which if nothing else, provides
links to other regional gaming/scifi/fandom happenings and groups.
As for stores, see if The Game Chest is still open:

I'm in CC. Depends on what you mean by "better." There are two decent
game stores that seem to have beaten the usual 3-month
launch-to-shuttered routine (Armchair Commanders and The Gamers Den) .
There are occaisional attempts at a convention; most notably the
long-suffering and aptly-titled CorpseCon, which I haven't heard from
in a long while. Most recently, RealmsCon has gathered some steam and
will have another outing this fall (http://www.realmscon.com/).
As to the scene itself, I really couldn't say. The only people I game
with anymore are my wife and friends that one or both of us has known
for a long time; I haven't gone in search of new players for years. My
last experience with that involved a disastrous attempt at a Camarilla
LARP chapter, and I haven't looked back. When you have players bringing
loaded shotguns to the game site, it's time to call it quits.
On a postive note, I will say that I have never encountered any flak
for my hobby around here, and except for college, I've been here all my
life. For all its warts, Corpus is a very quiet, laid-back,
do-your-own-thing kind of place.

Well, you know. That player was doing his own thing, too. It just
happened that his thing was loaded shotguns...

Actually, that player's "thing" was being the son of the guy who owned
the fabrication shop out in the boondocks that we used for a game site.
His dad is/was a former Special Forces sniper, martial arts
instructor, and munitions manufacturer for law enforcement. The guy
had things like Uzis, grenade launchers, and a partially-assembled
helicopter in his garage.
In a certain light, the shotgun was probably more at home in the locale
than we were.

Did they fancy themselves real vampires, or were they just doing
it for fun?

Thanks for the links. That should keep me busy for awhile.
Back in Maine I had a couple regulars who were also into LARPing Vampires.

No problem. Hope you find a group soon. Welcome to Texas, btw.

We should have approached Hot Topic about a sponsorship for our
chapter; they were making so much money off us anyway. :p

That's pretty good for a town the size of Corpus Christie.
