I'm a bit of a retro gamer (Ultima series/ recent Zorks) and I've heard
good things about Final Fatasy VII. Trouble is I'm having a lot of
difficulty finding a copy to play. They seem to be really expensive
and I would want a good condition version of the game. I play on PCs
and like to play games 5 years older or more (so I know my system will
be able to handle it easily - I have a P3-600MHz machine).
Is this game worth a lot now and will the price go up or come down with
time. It seems to be a classic game and the demo I saw just blew me
away. Amazing graphics. Can anyone tell me more?
Cheers

You'd be better off getting a Greatest Hits copy of the PSX version of
the game, which is easily available and only $20. Use an emulator
like ePSXe, which should run reasonably on your machine if you don't
turn any graphics enhancements or such on. Unfortunately the PSX
version isn't high-res like the PC version, making the graphics a lot
worse, but I'd be surprised if you could get the PC game to work
anyway; as is typical of the time, it wasn't a very good port.

Well, I kinda know how you are feeling. I was searching ebay a few weeks
back to see if I could buy another copy of FF7 for my PC. I wanted to
protect a copy for all time. The one I was watching sold for $40.
I have to disagree with Rob saying that the PC port wasn't that great. For
the most part, if worked wonderful on my computer. I only had one bug near
the last CD which prevented me from playing the game, but that was due to
running a old computer. I ended up getting a new PC a few months later and
finished the game.
One advantage of getting the PC is the slightly better graphics and
translation. Also, people built save game editors for the PC game, which was
a fun bonus when playing it the second time around.
But these things are fairly minor in my opinion and isn't work the extra
$20. I say go to Game Stop or some other place that sells used games, get a
PS emulator and go at it. >> Stay informed about: Why is it so difficult to find Final Fantasy VII? |

Does the PC version actually have better graphics than you'ld get on a
PSX emulator? The PC port of FF8, if I remember right, uses the same
resolution for the pre-rendered stuff as the PSX version did. The 3D
graphics are higher resolution, but you could get that in ePSXe, no? >> Stay informed about: Why is it so difficult to find Final Fantasy VII? |

Hey im from the UK too, and I know that you can buy FF7 off ebay. You
can get it fairly cheap, I'd say that's the best place to look. And
it's well worth buying, as it's probably the best RPG ever made! >> Stay informed about: Why is it so difficult to find Final Fantasy VII? |

I imagine doing that with the PSX FF7 would bring the flaws of the
weaker graphics to sharper effect. For example, I've played Wild ARMs
on ePSXe with a lot of the graphics enhancements turned on, and that
made it very easy to see the tile-based nature of the world map (which
was obscured by blur before). At any rate, such enhancements would
slow down a P3 600.

Once the movie (FF:Advent Children) hype dies down, FF-7 should drop to
less than half it's current price. (The least expensive used copy at
Amazon-US is now $67.00). If I were you, I would buy a $15.00 copy of
FF-8, and bide my time until the FF-7 sellers are forced to sober-up.
BTW, many FF gamers prefer FF-8 to FF-7...I don't, though. >> Stay informed about: Why is it so difficult to find Final Fantasy VII? |

I don't see how you can claim more FF gamers prefer FF8 to 7. I've heard of
more nerdy shrines dedicated to FF7 than 8. I find your claim hard to

If you read what he said he specifies "many" not most. And it's true,
though those that prefer FF8 tend not to be as obsessive as the FF7 crowd.
