I am currently playing Oblivion, at about level 25, and I just tried to
sacrifice to a well to get a blessing.

It said that I must continue my penance.

What does that mean?

Am I in trouble with the gods for messing with the thieves' guild?

Is there a way to actually do the penance and get back in good graces
with the gods?

You're considered too corrupt to receive a blessing - basically, your
infamy is too high.

Visit one wayshrine of each of the gods. This will reset your infamy
when completed.

Or install the Vile Lair mod and enjoy the blessings of evil instead
of good.

Anyone know where that map is..that tells you where all the shrines are
in Oblivion? I put mine in a barrel and the barrel respawned and the map
disappeared.

Look here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Image:Wayshrines_idiosyncrat.jpg
This one does actually show you all the wayshrines - that other one
merely showed one shrine for each god.
