I got into Intel computers pretty late. At the time the first 2-3 Tomb
Raider games came out, all I knew was that they starred Lara Croft and were
popular on the Playstation.
One day several years ago, I was in K-Mart and they had a PSX or PS2
hooked up so that you could play it. It was sitting there mid-game and I
remember looking at it and thinking, "It's Tomb Raider". I'm 99% sure that
it was Lara Croft and I figured it was either a copy of the full game that
someone in the store put in, or a demo disc with a playable demo of one of
the games.
Well, I recently finished Tomb Raider Chronicles (TR5) and what I saw on
that system in the store wasn't in any of the games. I played the computer
versions, but all the walkthroughs say that the PSX/PS2 versions are the
same. I doubt very much that it was Angel of Darkness because that only
came out in 2003 and it had to be 7-8 years ago that I saw this.
Here's what I remember;
When I saw it, Lara was in a small room. I believe there was a large urn
and also a mummy shambling around. The only exit was through a doorway and
down a ramp. I knew Lara was supposed to have weapons, so I pressed every
button on the controller, but she didn't draw any guns. So I ran down the
ramp and the mummy didn't follow me. At the bottom of the ramp was a large,
dark room with Egyptian symbols on the walls, a large wheel with wooden
spokes was sticking out of the ground (like the wheels you turn in Last
Revelation and Chronicles to open doors, except that I think this one was a
little bigger) and standing near one wall was an old man with a torch. I'm
not positive, but I believe he was dressed in robes. I think he watched you
as you moved around, but didn't move himself. I also couldn't seem to
interact with him at all. There were a couple different exits from the
room, but they had the monitor set so dark that any area not illuminated by
the old man's torch was completely pitch black. I also had never played a
TR game before so I had no idea what I was doing.
Thinking about it now, it seems like it most resembled The Last
Revelation, but that room wasn't in TR:LR.
Does anyone know if there were any Tomb Raider demos for the PSX/PS2 that
contained levels that weren't taken from any of the full games? Or is this
a level from Angel of Darkness and I just have the time frame all off? >> Stay informed about: Tomb Raider demos for PSX/PS2: levels not in full games? |

I think this was from the Last Revelation Demo, but I can't get that to
work on my system. >> Stay informed about: Tomb Raider demos for PSX/PS2: levels not in full games? |

There was a playable level specially written for the Times newspaper to
cover mount.

From the description of man-with-robes, yeah, to me it sounds like that
first level or so or TR:LR...where the guide wanders around...but...not sure
if I remember mummies at that stage (only scorpions with friggin' poison
*Shudder*)

Yes, my memory does resemble the first level of TR:LR, but I'm positive
that room wasn't in the game. >> Stay informed about: Tomb Raider demos for PSX/PS2: levels not in full games? |

A Last Revelation demo for the PSX/PS2? Or was this also in the demo for
the Windows version? Other than the one for TR3, which was on a disc that
was given to me, I've never played the demos for any of the games. I always
thought that they were just levels taken from the full games. >> Stay informed about: Tomb Raider demos for PSX/PS2: levels not in full games? |

Just the PC, and for some reason the demo level wasn't in the game.
Lara had to pull the big wheel to open a timed door above a climbable wall
near the guy with the torch. Then run over and climb up before the door
closed. As previously posted, I can't get this game to run on my current
system with Windows XP, and I can't install Windows ME on it either. >> Stay informed about: Tomb Raider demos for PSX/PS2: levels not in full games? |

It was in the demo of TR:LR

In the dead of night, a faint whisper from Jeff Reid was heard, on
04/01/2006 10:31 PM, and I could have sworn it said ...

I can confirm that ... from memory anyway ...
There was a room with the guide and big wheel to open a door. I think
you then crawled through ducts/small tunnels and came out onto the
Library ... where you started a real level from the game (at least a
good portion of it).
IIRC, you had no guns till you got to the Library.
But I also think there was more than one version of the demo for TR:LR.

Thanks, I downloaded the demo and played it. It doesn't match what I
remember exactly, but it's close enough that what I saw must have been a
TR:LR demo.
Are PSX/PS2 demos like that available to the average person, or only to
stores and such? Now that I know what game it was for, I'm curious to see
how accurate my memory is. >> Stay informed about: Tomb Raider demos for PSX/PS2: levels not in full games? |
