Right but unused can also mean throw around a warehouse, had stuff
piled on, left in front of a window and faded also....

NEW OLD STOCK = Never distributed, never used, never sold, etc, stock.
Doesn't matter who made it or what it was. It rolled off the machines,
and never did anything from there.

Can't add much to this.... Never used original stock. Not "new
reproduction". The actual condition of that "New Old Stock" can be
quite variable.

Yes, I understand regarding the warehouse wear and tear. My problem is
with people selling reproduction artwork as NOS. There definition is
NEW or OLD STOCK. Please Respond!

Matty, Are you saying that reproduction art today can be considered
NOS. Please Advise to " Doesn't matter who made it "??

Technically, repro art work can be NOS. Perhaps a good term to start
using would be NOS OEM (original equipment mfg) for non repro items?

This was discussed a while ago and I believe the consensus was that
Repro stuff did not constitute NOS, except something like a "Willis"
Repro, I believe the "Old" in NOS referred to parts that have aged,
like a fine wine Smile
Some people have even said NOS means New Original Stock.
But the problem with this lies in the same issue of people calling
something "Mint" There really is no standard to go by...

Yes, but it does not mean the item will be mint or perfect. I've received
many NOS cpo's that look like they've been laying on a garage floor for
years, dirt, grime, peeling paper and dirty adhesive. It's still NOS as it
hasn't been applied...but certainly not mint.

And, sometimes the repro is actually better quality.

John,

My definition comes in a literal sense. Although Grammar is not my
speciality, Take the term for what it is:

New Old Stock

New - Never used in any manner it was intended for.

Old - Beyond it's model/marketing sales term. (Ie. discontinued, etc)

Stock - A product of manufacture.

NOS should not be used as a stand alone term to describe the products
origin. It should be coupled and used as a description externsion of
the condition of the product. Ie.

"This control panel overlay is REPRODUCTION. It is NOS and has never
been applied or mishandled and was kept stored in a cool dry place for
the last 5 years."

- Matt

Matty, I'd agree with you completely.... if people would actually advertise
that way. Unfortunately you're lucky to just get a NOS identifier and just
guess the rest...

Really, it's buyer beware. If you're considering buying then ask. If the
seller doesn't know or won't answer then you have to consider the risk.

To me, NOS (new old stock) means original OEM parts that never got
used. I recently purchased some "NOS Atari Missile Command fire
buttons" off of the bay and when they showed up, I discovered that they
are definitely not NOS as the switches are completely different from
the originals that came with my MC... :-/
