I don't remember it enough to be able describe it well enough.

If you google "bf1942 artillery", you'll find lots of help.

Yes, scouts can spot for indirect fire units. This includes defense
guns, but also mounted guns on ships, as well as artillery units. To
enter this mode, press alternate fire.
