Hi all,
My name is Ming Liu. I am a doctoral student at Michigan State
University, USA. I am conducting a survey research on online gaming as
part of the requirements for my Ph.D. candidacy. I would like to
invite you to participate and your responses would be greatly
appreciated! Specifically, I am studying players' experiences with
online games and how online gaming impacts their lives.
This is an anonymous survey, meaning that you will never be asked for
your name. You will be assured of complete confidentiality and
privacy. You need to be at least 18 years old to take part in this
study.
If you are willing to help me do this study, please use the link below
to start the online survey. The survey will take you only about 10-15
minutes to complete.

ugh, I just took your survey and now I'm very depressed.

Another poorly designed survey. The wording is so highly charged that it
will cause:
1) People to deny they do what is described
2) Claim it is true merely to distort the results
If the purpose is to learn statistics, then fine. If it is to really
learn about online gaming players, then it is badly flawed.

As I was answering, I thought "Oh, this is going to look like I'm often
alone irl because of online gaming", when my answers to those "social"
questions would have been the same 10-15-20 years ago. But then, maybe
that's why I'm attracted to WoW. I've never enjoyed crowds/parties, and I
much prefer being home to being "out".
Oh, well.

Just tested and there is no way to skip a page without filling out every

most people will not spend that much time on a single survey, and those

Survey creation is a specialized skill. I am surprised either of the
professors for these two surveys (another just as bad showed up
yesterday) allowed these to proceed. If they had been my students, I
would have sent them back to reread the chapter on survey creation or to
strongly defend the inherent biases their surveys included.

Gah! All those "How often do you feel totally alone" type of

Now I need a spot of online gaming to cheer myself up!

Hehe same, I'm not a social person in RL, being social in WoW etc just
means I have a social life at all rather than none, which was the case
before I got online... still isn't gonna look good though!

There aren't many of us, are there? Or are there more, but they're afraid
to admit it?? Not that I care. (The only thing that bugs me about being
rather solitary is that there will always be those people who try to "fix"
me. I'm not broken. Well, at least I'm not broken ~that~ way.)

Well, I love chatting to people in RL (I do volunteer work and always
enjoy it) but going out doesn't appeal to me as much as staying in -
preferably with a good book or some good company.

I work in an insurance agency, so I have ***plenty*** of contact with
others. When I get home I just want [nearly] everyone to leave me alone.

I've always been a loner. Several friends have commented over the
decades that being a loner is partly what makes me a good programmer --
I prefer being alone with my computer over going out to parties.
The problem with this survey is the wording, which demonstrates a
pre-ordained conclusion of "if you play WoW, you must be a social
misfit."
All surveys have built in biases, but when they are this blatant, the
survey loses all semblance of viability. It causes most people to lie,
because they don't want too appear to be misfits. Change the wording,
and the repetition back-to-back of insulting questions and the results
would likely be very different.
Basically, this survey is not graduate level work. It might be OK for a
freshman, but I'd flunk any student that presented it to me as an upper
classman, let alone in a gradutate program.
