is it just me or is sims 2 (and university and nightlife) just not as
fun as old sims? it's inexplicable, it SHOULD be more fun, but somehow
it isn't. maybe i've outgrown it, i am a hundred and ten years old, but
it was wldly fun before and now, i play for 5 minutes and quit. it
incorporates things i've always wanted -- for them to learn from their
behavior, procreation that has genetic reasoning behind it, 360°
views, better animation, but, somehow it's just not "this graw is
fredeshay!"

is it just me?

Everyone is different i suppose.
Myself.. i love S2- but on the same note, there is plenty i do miss
about S1. So there are likely other folks who feel the same way.

Speaking of "Dis graw is fredeshay" (a phrase i miss hearing in S2 BTW)
today is the birthday of the lady who created the "Dis Graw" phrase
among other Simmish, Gerri Lawlor! She is a close personal friend of
mine and today is her 37th Birthday. I just left her a little voice
mail and sang to her. Will likely see her by this weekend too.
At least i dont make her say Sim-like things to me like i used to when
Sims were brand new LOL. Now, only if we've had a few too many
cocktails and it all starts to sound Simmish anyhow.
Happy Birthday Miss Gerri!

Cheers,
Eddie

It's not just you.

Whatever Sims 1 lacked in complexity, I made up for with my
imagination. I had all kinds of scenarios playing out in Sims 1. With
Sims 2 I am too busy trying to keep their Aspirations high and
hurrying to beat the clock before they reach old age. And the Sims
going to college - ugh. I HATE the "work" involved in getting a Sim
graduated from college. To me that is not fun. Games are supposed to
be fun.

I loved Sims 1 because my favorite Sims were all immortal (barring
accidents of course!) and my self-Sim had a GREAT time. She was
forever young and beautiful, being romanced by various Sim-men and
happy as a lark as long as her bars were green...ahhh those were the
days, LOL.

I miss the Makin' Magic stuff a LOT. And the pets - my self-Sim was a
witchy-type who had a pet fox, as I recall. One thing I do like
better in Sims 2 though - the ghosts are a lot scarier and gruesome.
And I like the fact that Sims are aware of their family ties (in Sims
1 I had to send one of my self-Sim's grown sons to the ladderless pool
because he would NOT stop hitting on his mother, gross!)

I've tried reinstalling Sims 1 but it just seems really archaic now
compared to the Sims 2, so I don't get the same enjoyment out of it as
I used to. Sims 2 has spoiled me for Sims 1, alas. If only they
could combine the best elements of both!

It's not me, that's for sure.

When I went back to S1 after playing S2 for months on end, I wondered
what I ever saw in S1.

There are two things about S1 I miss, though. 1) As morbid as it
sounds, I don't like the fact that children and babies don't die in S2.
It's simply unrealistic. Children die sometimes, and to "fireproof"
them the way they did in the second game is just too PC for my tastes.
2) On a related note, I wish couples would split up when they get angry
enough at each other with the napsack and pole. That's often a very
handy and amusing way of dealing with sims you don't like.

Yeah, actually you do have one good point there.

The game is getting too complex. I haven't even tried to run a business
yet, for two reasons: 1) It looks bloody complicated, and 2) I've been
in Europe for a month! Smile But seriously, I'm glad to have the new
objects and interactions in OFB, but I'm not sure how many businesses
I'll be starting. I just don't care about it enough to try to get good
at it.

Did you really go to Europe for a month? Good for you!

I tried running a business or two the way the game is meant to be played
and it was simply too complicated so I gave up. I downloaded some hacks
that gave my business owner all gold badges and that kept employees'
motives high while on the job and it was a little bit more fun after
that, but I still dislike having my playable sims come into a shop (or
worse, a car lot!) and spend like there is no tomorrow. I think there
is a hack for that, as well, but I didn't bother with it. I simply
don't play the businesses. I don't use many of the new objects, either,
though I did download a buyable servo and that's a pretty handy thing to
have. No more maid, nanny or gardener bills! LOL The new stage tool
is pretty nifty for building L-shaped staircases, and that's about the
only thing I really use from the whole expansion pack. Was it worth the
money just for that one thing? No. But, the money's spent now and I do
have it.

The good news is that having it installed doesn't mean my gameplay has
to change unless I just want it to. I mean, it didn't change anything
for non-business owning sims, like Nightlife and University did. (Both
added wants and Nightlife added the chemistry thing.)

Everything form "The Sims" should have been included in "The Sims2."
The whole thing is a rip-off.
There is no need for all the copy expiation packs.
Maxis knew how to make the 3D environment form the get go.
We could have had all of "The Sims" plus extras from the start.

It was just easer to copy the ex-packs that come up with new stuff.

I miss Simlish, too. Honestly, I can barely hear them speaking to each
other now and I certainly can't make out repeated phrases. But that's
small potatoes compared to all the rest of the good stuff we got with
the new game. It's eye candy, the houses look more real, the genetics
are very neat, and I like the different life stages, too. To me, this
game is 100 times more fun than the old one. Since I don't have to use
my imagination to fill in the blanks that the old game left, I'm free to
let it run wild with stories and building. I love it.

I agree. That's why I like using hacks. With a couple of them (the
College Adjuster and Merola's Multi-Painting) I can boost a sim through
college in about ten minutes, just for grades and finals. Don't do
assignments, don't go to class, just keep clicking and get them through
it. Then, if I want to, I can go ahead and play the young adult sim
through parties and farting around on community lots, dating (now that
we have Nightlife) and see which sims they like the best in order to
choose a mate. That makes it fun for me.

Well, with the Elixir of Life (which is an aspiration reward and NOT a
hack) or the Multi-Painting (which IS a hack) you can keep adding days
to your sim and never grow old if you don't want to. I usually let my
sims age, though. After everyone in the neighborhood has procreated a
few times, it's time to play new ones and let the old ones die. But,
even after they are dead, you can resurrect them if you want to.
Forever young and beautiful is very possible in this game. If you use
the cow plant, it also adds a whole new story line to the mix, too.
That gorgeous slinky blonde with the mysterious plant and all the
tombstones in her back yard, and all the missing NPCs and townies....
LOL Just drink your enemies and keep adding days to your life. That's
every bit as much fun as the Makin' Magic stuff was, to me anyway.

Check out the Harry Potter Theme set at MTS2. Some magic stuff there.
I do miss the drunken garden gnomes, though. That was a stroke of
genius. I think pets will be in the next expansion pack, too, which is
something else to look forward to.

I put Sims1 back on my computer recently because I wanted to replicate
the houses from the core neighborhoods. I felt almost handicapped not
being able to swing the camera where I wanted it, being limited to two
pretty flat dimensions, etc. For me, it's the difference between
cartoons and Pixar movies. LOL

I came late to Sims1 - 2 was already out - and played it, just the base
game, long enough to get hooked. Then I broke the disk.
It had belonged to one of my children, and he had Sims2, which he let me
have.

I found it difficult at first, managed to pick up Sims Deluxe cheap, and
later got a pile of 2nd hand eps which I still haven't played, because I the
got the hang of the camera etc in the new one.

I admit though, I played with Aging off for a while to get used to it, after
the first time a sim aged to elder and I felt so sad. Smile
I still do it sometimes, with a new adult created in CAS, to get their lives
off the ground. But I can't run Sims2 on my laptop, so I still have the
original on there. I have been back to it, but found some things so
difficult, it seems much harder to make and keep friends for example.

I don't find it difficult getting a Sim though Uni, if they were born into
the game - they usually have a heap of skills by the time they become a
child, read up a few more then, and once they are teens and I know what
they want to do, I tryto make sure they have all they need for their degree,
or even for the top of their career, if that;' their lifetime want, then
they can either rush the course with the College Adjuster, or do the minimum
needed, and spend time out and about.

I feel rather like that with OFB too. I think I'm glad I have it, but can't
get excited about running businesses as such. I have got one family making
a nice bit on the side allowing visitors who buy tickets the run of their
home.

Uni is useful for some sims and NightLife I like - it's easy to increase
aspiration lebels by sending them on a date. And as I had built community
lots with little cafes long before, it was nice to go back and make them
work properly.

I agree with you about the hacks, I've always said that the Sims is an
environment, like a dollhouse, rather than a game that is played to
win. I don't consider turning aging off or adding simoleans to be
cheating. Cheating doesn't apply to dollhouses. But this is all exactly
why hate the aspirations, I agree that the fact they exist turns the
Sims into more of a "game". Do you know of a hack that removes
aspirations? That's Mac-friendly?

thanks!

What I'm looking for is something that doesn't help raise it but
something that freezes it or removes it. I don't want to think about it
at all as in I would prefer to not have my sim grieve inconsolably over
a flour sack until I make her stare at a painting til it goes away. I
want the grief or anxiety to never appear in the first place. Is this
possible?
