After all the great messages you posted back about a month ago, just
thought I'd say that today was the day and I had my first real-world
flight as (co-) pilot. The instructor let me take over from him at
about 1500' and I had continuous control until 800' and we were lined
up with the airport for landing. (Blackbushe - EGLK).
I managed to look up from the instruments (a PA38 Tomahawk) a good
deal, as stressed by some of you - even though the horizon was
obscured by haze (otherwsie great, sunny weather).
Great experience, and much closer to FS9 from a control point of view
than I'd have thought. A/C had tendency to continue banking as I
turned and I had to correct this more than I had thought, but no
mishaps and am back in one piece!
Will definiytely do it again - maybe not all the way to PPL, but then
again, who knows! Highly recommended experience. FS9 won't feel quite
the same again.

I thought I read somewhere that less than 1% of the civilized world has
ever controlled an aircraft, but I cannot site this fact. Regardless,
congratulations!

When I took up flying 6 years ago I saw a statistic that said that there are
650,000 pilots in the USA and at any given time there are 6,000 planes in
the air. Based on the current population that would mean that just over
2/10ths of 1% of the population are pilots.
So Martin consider yourself on of the elite few who have had the opportunity
to pilot and airplane

Mazeltov!
Now you can officially call yourself a "student pilot" at cocktail parties.
It's a real chick magnet.

I actually met her before I was a student pilot and, at the time, she
wanted absolutely nothing to do with flying in a small aircraft.

Martin,
That is great news. It is certainly exciting, isn't it? I would highly
recommend sticking with it and working towards your PPL. It is a real
feeling of accomplishment when you can go to an airport, rent an airplane,
do the pre-flight, take off, fly somewhere, and land without anyone else in
the airplane! Just remember that you can take your PPL training at your own
pace, and it doesn't have to happen overnight.
Just remember that if you do become a licensed pilot, that you will be
able to do something that up until a hundred years ago no-one, no matter how
wealthy, how mighty, or how famous could do. I often think of all of the
famous figures from history that could only dream of flight, and now it is
within the grasp of almost anyone who has the will and the desire (and the
cash!). Truly amazing to me. Take care.....

Coo ! Never looked at it like that. The KUDOS of it all!
Next time, I'll go for piloting out of the next ICAO up ( EGLK to EGLL
!!! It's only 15 miles away and was very visible from 3000 ft. The
instructor wouldn't let me overfly it to have a look around - the
killjoy!!).

Congratulations. I thought I was going to be a "first flighter" a few
weeks ago but mis-estimated both time (long wait) and cost. Will try
again soon.
I'm envious and very happy for you.

Tell him that you have flown into Heathrow many times in FS9 and I'm
sure it will change his mind. He'll probably let you shoot a couple of
ILSs and generally use the airport's facilities to the full.
ATC: "Speedbird 11 line up and wait after the departing Tomahawk"
.. . . 2 minutes later . . .
ATC "Speedbird 11 clear to take off, caution wake turbulence from the
preceding Tomahawk"

Thanks both. Post back how you get on Capt. Ken..
Only problems with PPL as far as I am concerned are that I only work
for a couple of months each year (by choice), so £6000 odd spent on
this is a huge chunk out of my tight budget.
I also spend a lot of the year travelling abroad (again my choice -
and the main reason for the first choice, mentioned above!), mostly in
India, where the nearest airfield where I could train is a very long
way away. There was an article in a national newspaper in India a few
months back saying how all the training airstrips in the country are
closing down and that it is very hard to find flight instruction at
all there these days.
So I'll do as many flights as I feel I can afford here, and bear the
PPL in mind for a time when I can manage it, geographically and
financially speaking! I'd love to do it, all things being equal.

Don't they charge landing fees at Heathrow?
Or don't they apply to touch-and-goes?
