Not quite true. My first TiVo (an HDR312) has had a lifetime sub since I
bought it. Eight months in, it died. I paid the $69 or so to get it
swapped out for a refurbished one, and the lifetime sub transferred to the
replacement unit. TiVo has stated if you go through them to get a dead
TiVo replaced, they'll transfer your lifetime sub.
About a year after the Series 2 models came out, they offered a
one-time-only opportunity to Series 1 owners to transfer their lifetime
subs to new Series 2 boxes. I didn't take them up on it, because I was
making the switch to DirecTV-integrated models. I still have my old
Series 1, and it still works fine. I've saved over $600 in monthly fees
thanks to my decision to buy the lifetime option up front. And that TiVo
still has value thanks to the lifetime sub.
