purchased the premium package yesterday,
basically the games are unplayable, the sound
stammers for about 5 seconds every few minutes.
its like the graphics are waiting for the sound to catch up.
my PC
amd 64 3500
1 gig kingston ram 400mhz
250 gig seatgate sata
geforce 6600GT 128mb
on board ac97 sound.
never experienced this sort of problem before,
all my drivers etc are up to date,no virus`s etc.
Can i get a refund on this package? as it plainly does
not work.
All other games are ok battlefield etc.
i have tried running halflife2 etc,at minuim level,no
filtering etc, sound settings low, changed hardware level
to basic for the sound card in dxdiag.
nothing seems to solve this problem. >> Stay informed about: halflife 2 cs source dod source nice games shame about the.. |

I have some stuttering in HL2 during load
Nothing in online games (CS, DOD etc)
Upgrading to 2Gb mem should remove the stuttering
Also check space on HD and size of swap file

Hold your horses, Peter; that shouldn't be necessary, surely? I have 1GB RAM
and have had no such problems. Throwing hardware at it is not the solution.
You may have something regarding the HDD/swap file, though.
Muggins, did your AC97 onboard sound come with one of those Sound Manager
utilities? My MSI board came with one and it has caused several problems in the
past. Dreadful thing; I daren't even open it to check what settings might have
affected your sound, as it inevitably screws something up. If you have one,
either disable it or restore all effects, equalisers and volume controls to nice
neutral values.
Do you have any other software running while you play? Virus checkers, for
instance?
Other than that, don't know what to suggest. Have you considered more RAM?

Sound stuttering has been reported as vanished if the rig is upgraded to
hold 2Gb mem
Stuttering occurs when scenes is not loaded fast enough due to swapping and
HD trashing
By swapping I am referring to Valves cache systems (GFC's loaded in mem)

Didn't know that. Doesn't happen to me, at least not with the regularity that
Muggins is talking about. Maybe the occasional loading incident, but not enough
that I've ever really noticed, and my PC isn't as good as Muggins'. I think I
did get that kind of trouble in Lost Coast, though, now you mention it (amongst
other crashworthy events). Suspect you are right about him possibly having
insufficient HD space (I don't get thrashing either).
Aren't DoD/CS maps all loaded at once?
I still wonder whether he is clearing out enough memory by shutting down other
programs.

Hmm, i'm not sure about that, my old rig had no stuttering and only had
1GB.. HL2 really shouldn't need any more than that IMO
> Stuttering occurs when scenes is not loaded fast enough due to swapping and

Not always, I seem to recall (When HL2 was first released) some people
their RAM from 512MB to 1GB with zero improvement on the stuttering front.
> By swapping I am referring to Valves cache systems (GFC's loaded in mem)
actually I think the HD used to be fairly 'idle' when stuttering
occurred on mine - alot of people who had stuttering problems were using
bad gfx drivers.. I seem to remember solving my issues by downgrading
my 9800pro drivers to ones which were a few months older.

thanks for the input guys,
I have now moved hl2 etc to a different drive,an 80gig seatgate sata
hl2 dod cs/source is all that resides on that drive nothing else,my
main 250 gig drive has 180 gig free,i have disabled windows indexing
on both drives.I have uninstalled the sound card drivers to clean out
any slight adjustments i have made and reinstalled them, also taking
the care to remove all register entries. At this point cs source seems
ok a slight stutter now and then,hl2 the same, but DOD source is still
really bad, specially when the end music kicks in at the end of a
round.I have everything at basic level.Maybe it just does not like
onboard sound or the onboard sound is a system hog?
But then again battlefield plays fine as does UT2004.
Bloody weird. >> Stay informed about: halflife 2 cs source dod source nice games shame about the.. |

Pretty weird
We have to P4 rigs with onboard sound (P4 2.6, 1Gb mem etc)
DOD plays sweet as a dream, except during map changes/loading where we have
stuttering probably due to HD trashing as mentioned in my earlier reply
I have asked the kids
the source engine relies on directx (graphics + sound)
We have had major problems on one of the PC's until I did a complete
reinstall
(CS:S could not start - crashed to the desktop)

I know this is a very old post and probably no one from the original thread
is going to get, but this newsgroup is good about being in Google, so I am
posting my reply anway.
1gig ram is plent, and that will not be the problem, especially when the
original poster has pretty much done everything that even Steam says to do
to fix the problem. I have the stutering to. It comes and goes, and I did
everything the OP did and even played with lowering the dx levels (-dxlevel
80) in launch properties of the games.
You very well could have a driver conflict somewhere, which is a common
problem in new comps and video cards and XP. But there is one more think you
should try, even though I know you won't like it.
Lower your FPS. Go into console and type this:
fps_max
It should show you the current setting. Depending on the game, it could be
set as high 500 or even above. I had a stutering problem in TFC and fpsmax
was set for 72. I changed it to 50 and the game and sound ran much better.
The sound stutering went away.
There is also a snd_mixahead setting you can play with, but I have never
heard anyone say they had success with that. Default setting is 0.1, so
change it to a higher number in console like snd_mixahead 0.2 or 0.3. If you
have to go higher than that though, you are wasting your time.
Hope that helps. >> Stay informed about: halflife 2 cs source dod source nice games shame about the.. |
