Hey

I had a rude suprise this morning. I couldn't load my character ! I
checked morgue.txt, and no, it's not there so I must have really saved
him. /var/games/crawl shows a bunch of files named Veles1000.bla
(including .bak, but no sav; renaming, recreating directory structure,
packaging to tar.gz and chmod/chgroup to b0rsuk.games didn't work). But
the dir has no Veles1000.tar.gz file. If I recreate one myself ( see
above) crawl doesn't load it and deletes the archive.
I have an another _working_ savegame (of a human palading stuck in
Labyrinth; I can't even reach the middle and there seems to be no
secred doors. I can't dig.) which I used as an example.
I also checked Veles.txt (character dump) to make sure I didn't spell
the name wrong.
Is there anything I can do ?
I use Kubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger. Other crawl savegames seem to be
located in /var/games/crawl. Packaged into a (name)1000.tar.gz files.
Directory structure inside such an archive:
/var/games/crawl/(name)1000.0a (and so forth). Permissions (I use -R)
are: 100644. Owner: b0rsuk (my login), group games.
I did it exactly as above and it doesn't work. Crawl says I must be new
here ! :<

If someone would be so nice, I could send a working and not_working
savegames for comparison. In case It can't be recovered... sniff... (I
use google groups, and it seems I can't attach)

Ok, I checked some earlier topics and they seem to reach the conclusion
you can't recover from a crash (except I used 'S'ave, and remember no
crashing !) on Debian-based distros. I'll have to make a script for
savegame backup.
Farewell, Veles.

Looks typical for a game crash, though I'm not quite sure about the .bak
file. While running a game, these stuff is generated and (normally)
compressed at saving time. As a first aid you should copy all
Veles1000.bla files into a seperate folder, just for security. I hope
for you they are still complete.

I have another directory structure and my copy of Crawl is using .zip
instead of tar.gz., so I only can give you a vague hint: all I have to
do in such a case is to pack all these files into a single .zip file
('zip Veles1000.zip Veles1000.*' or the other way around). Since I never
have to pack something into .tar.gz (only unpacking), I can't be more
specific here. You should consult the man pages of tar and gzip. Or hope
for someone else giving you concrete instructions.

Good luck,
R.

I can't confirm this, but if it's actually true it would be really poor.
I wouldn't use a debian package then and compile my own one instead.
Everytime I had to recover from a crash (3 or 4 times now) it worked for
me (gentoo-Linux, Crawl self-compiled).
