The request for monster suggestions got me thinking:

One of my favorite aspects of Crawl is that rather than endless flavors
of the same basic monster type, there are are a few unusual monsters
that require significant tactical and/or strategic choices. This
includes genuinely one-of-a-kind monsters like hydras, and monsters
that are unique for where they occur, such as jellies and centaurs. If
we're going to add more monsters, I'd like to see a few really
interesting ones rather than 20 variations of the same type (see:
draconians).

In that spirit, two ideas:

* A monster -- just one -- that can move through walls. If it flees,
and prefers to flee through walls, you'd want to fight it in an open
space to be able to finish it off -- something you never want to do
currently. I know this would take some coding, but it would change the
game in a really interesting way.

* A very slow, tough monster with a ranged attack that picks up any
object it comes across. (Gelatinous cube, anyone?) The safe option
would be avoid it, but you'd always be tempted to try your luck in case
it was carrying something valuable.

* Block Golem:
Looks like a block of wall. It moves at 1, can only move in the 4 main
directions (the big weakness) and basically tries to squish you against
a solid object.

If it pushes you into an open square, you take only very minor bruising
damage.

If it pushes you against a solid wall/object, you take alot of damage.

If you are pushed into a squishy object like a monster, you take
minor/med damage, or maybe a domino effect.

The armour & life of this golem are rather high, but you can never
miss, but then again he never misses you either.

Some of the Earth spells should do ALOT of damage to this golem.

* Greater Block Golem:
As above, but moves at .5 and is a metal block.

Doesn't do any more damage, but is harder to kill. Perhaps only by
disintegration and dig.
----------------------------------------------
* Gelantaneous cube:
Like a red jelly but only moves in the 4 main directions. It's acid is
weak, cannot damage or digest non-organic material.

Picks up loot infinitely and holds it within itself, until you relieve
it, of course.

Takes less damage from blunt attacks
----------------------------------------------
* Mirror beetle:
Reflects direct damage conjuration type spells 99% of the time.
----------------------------------------------
*Mad Hermit
Caster guy with very broad n unpredictable spell effects.
He is crazy and might lose interest in you while fighting and walk
away.
----------------------------------------------
* Greater necrophage
Bigger meaner version.
Eating a chunk, will, amongst the other effects cast a powerful long
lasting SILENCE spell on you (100%), and cure 1 level of fast
metabolism mutation (50%).
----------------------------------------------
* Orc kamikaze
He has a scroll of immolation.
----------------------------------------------
* Great Tentacle
Confined to deep water, nobody knows what creature it originates from,
though a massive octopus critter is assumed.
The tentacle has the reaching attribute, and if "killed' by a final
blow from a cutting weapon, will randomly drop mutagenic chunks around
the vicinity as it withdraws to the deep.
----------------------------------------------
* Drop bear
Perched on plants, when you stand near a plant, he might ambush you!
He is undetectable until then, but if you succeed a trap/door check,
you force him to reveal himself.
----------------------------------------------
* Weaponmaster
This guy can animate weapons to fight for him! He's not bad at fighting
either. Perhaps he is the original "Tukima", in that case, make him a
one of a kind.

weak, cannot damage or digest non-organic material.

Picks up loot infinitely and holds it within itself, until you relieve
it, of course.

Takes less damage from blunt attacks

* Mirror beetle:
Reflects direct damage conjuration type spells 99% of the time.
----------------------------------------------
*Mad Hermit
Caster guy with very broad n unpredictable spell effects.
He is crazy and might lose interest in you while fighting and walk
away.
----------------------------------------------
* Greater necrophage
Bigger meaner version.
Eating a chunk, will, amongst the other effects cast a powerful long
lasting SILENCE spell on you (100%), and cure 1 level of fast
metabolism mutation (50%).
----------------------------------------------
* Orc kamikaze
He has a scroll of immolation.
----------------------------------------------
* Great Tentacle
Confined to deep water, nobody knows what creature it originates from,
though a massive octopus critter is assumed.
The tentacle has the reaching attribute, and if "killed' by a final
blow from a cutting weapon, will randomly drop mutagenic chunks around
the vicinity as it withdraws to the deep.

Perched on plants, when you stand near a plant, he might ambush you!
He is undetectable until then, but if you succeed a trap/door check,
you force him to reveal himself.

* Weaponmaster
This guy can animate weapons to fight for him! He's not bad at fighting
either. Perhaps he is the original "Tukima", in that case, make him a
one of a kind.
