What's funny about the "drained of all life" death type?

A mixture of ogre, goblin, DL1, cLV1, 4 creatures killed, 18/19 hp
left, and 'does no damage' message. And the death, of course.
No, not really funny. But I can make my point with this. It would be
*sweet* if crawl somehow underlined creatures carrying glowing weapons.
I usually examine all humanoids if I run into a group, but it gets
tiresome quickly.
It's a part of larger problem: you never know how dangerous a group of
humanoids is, because they're largely dependant on equipment. And
equipment is not visible until you e'x'amine. >> Stay informed about: -crawl- Very funny. |

*Now* you're talkin'. That's a problem I've thought about every now and
then in the past, too. (And "the player should x-check everything"
doesn't fly in my book.)
(Many of those times with no thought of ever having power to change the
situation, though.) The only trouble is, we've got so much going on
with display traits -- inverse video, etc. -- already that I'm worried
there's nothing left that can safely be used.
Would you do me the favor of Feature-Requesting this? >> Stay informed about: -crawl- Very funny. |

Call me paranoid, but I routinely e-x-amine most humanoids that my
characters encounter. A gnall wielding a spiked flail or a halberd is
more dangerous than a gnoll wielding a club or a spear, even if that
halberd isn't glowing or runed.

Ahhh, stupid question... how /does/ one formally request features or
report bugs? I apologize if you've announced this already. >> Stay informed about: -crawl- Very funny. |

The more careful players always used to x-check for monsters' awareness
status. That hasn't prevented acceptance of stab_brand and
may_stab_brand, which have been around for quite a few months now with
no public uproar. So yes, it's always a good thing to check monsters,
but it's such a robotic task that I see no harm in letting the robots
do it.
But actually, you probably were referring to weapons' "marked" status
not being the most important thing. That's true, but that there is
gonna be a *damn* hard one to take on when all we've got to work with
text, unless there's some elegant interface hack that occurs to
somebody. Failing the finding of said elegant brilliant solution, I
think it's discussion-worthy to find a way to at least mark the simple
trait of "marked weapon"/"unmarked weapon or no weapon."

That's because awareness and (more pertinently) retreating/fleeing
status can change every round, and apply to pretty much every potential
foe. As opposed to a single check, on humanoids only.
I like having robots do the work, too, whenever possible. I'm just
sayin'.
You know what I'd like visibly branded? Whether that damned kobold has
a wand tucked in the top of his tiny boot. /That/ doesn't show up on
e'x'amine, and that's deadlier than any glowing dagger. I don't
necessarily dislike it as a deadly surprise, but as long as we're
branding potential threats.... Maybe it could show up on e'x'amine
after the humanoid takes its first shot, after which one might assume
the wand would remain visible, clutched in a scaly paw.

Indeed. Though it does sound warning bells when the stout orc warrior
is wielding an elven trident. I always figure that he would only use
such an effete weapon if it bore some particularly lethal enchantment.
Always safest to be cautious. >> Stay informed about: -crawl- Very funny. |

Hmm, Furigana? Accents? But unicode wouldn't count as 'text', would it?

By the way, why are ethnic weapons never marked? Not even to members of
the same species? Trying all those orcish axes and leather armours cann
be quite tedious.

I think it's far too late for that. I suggest something different, and
hopefully elegant.
Instead of pressing x and having to hover the cursor over each monster,
you'd just press a _KEY_ to toggle 'equipment view mode'. In this
mode....
- monsters not carrying anything, or carrying just small weapons are
replaced with white @'s.
- monsters with big, but ordinary weapons are replaced with yellow @'s.
- monsters with small glowing/shiny/magicallooking weapons are replaced
by blue @'s.
- monsters carrying weapons both big and glowing are replaced with
purple @'s. (because purple comes from mixing yellow and blue).
Then you press _KEY_ again, and the view turns back to normal. The
point is simply to make it much faster to check for big/magical
weapons.
I guess you could think about something similar for armors, but armors
I nowhere as lethal. It's not such a big issue. >> Stay informed about: -crawl- Very funny. |

This probably falls into the "damn hard" or perhaps "impossible without
major rewriting" category for crawl, but one of the solutions which has
previously been discussed on r.g.r.d is to change the monster type once
the player knows about the equipment.
For example, upon seeing an orc carrying a glowing war axe, that orc is
immediately classed as an "orc warrior" and turns red. If an orc picks
up the same weapon, the same things happens at that point. Or, the first
time it zaps you with a wand of draining, it becomes an "orc enervator"
or similar, and changes colour accordingly.
This would, of course, create all sorts of conflicts in crawl. Does an
imp with a wand of ice turn white? No, that's an ice imp...
Perhaps there could be one (currently rarely used) colour which gets
reserved exclusively for monsters with deadly equipment, and then you
only have to recognise the cases where the monster's own colouring is
more important than any equipment it might have (like orc sorcerors).

I say: blinking! Can be annoying, but in Dwarf Fortress everything is
blinking so it's just a problem of adaptation.
