Get Fire Magic ASAP. While you're walking around/slaughtering, pray to
vehumet and wait till the prayer times out to pray again. This ensures
maximum likelihood of receiving a book and it's good practice anyway.
With a Ring of Fire, Vehumet's spell power increase and Conjurations 13
you're going to be good with Fire right from the start.

> Inventory:
> Hand weapons
> Missiles

Dump all the darts, flails and bows, etc. They're redundant or
ineffective at this point.

> Armour
> Y - a +2 robe (worn)
> (You took it off an orc wizard on level 3 of the Orcish Mines)

Pick up all robes, leather armour and one handed weapons you see and
stash them. Later you want to read detect curse and wield/wear test for
armours with resistance or weapons with protection.

Zap these at a wall with experience in your pool to build evocations
later(will improve your wand use and it won't cost much, esp. for a
Spriggan).

> k - a wand of hasting
> (You found it on level 5 of the Dungeon)

Nice. Make sure you use it when needed. If you use it several times in
a short time period you will Glow and may develop harmful mutations,
but that's better than dying.

> Scrolls
> b - a scroll of remove curse

Stash them. Otherwise you might lose them to fire.

> x - 2 scrolls labeled IFUB RI {tried}

Stash these(Lair: 1 is a good spot).

> Potions
> n - a potion of speed
> p - 3 potions of heal wounds
> s - 3 potions of restore abilities

Stash these. Cold attacks destroy potions, and you (almost)never need
these immediately. I wouldn't carry more than one at any rate.

Although you have two ice magic books, I'd hold out for a fire book
from Vehumet since you have the ring of fire already. Stay away from
the Lair, Snake Pits, Swamp for now until you have fire spells. Descend
as deep as you dare and play cautiously and use your superior speed to
avoid death until then. Once Fire Magic is rolling you will be a force.

> You have 7 experience left.

When you get some experience in your pool, stab some plants with a
vanilla dagger until your Fighting Skill is at 2(you will probably gain
a bunch of short blades even with it turned off). This will net you
some extra hit points and it's not too costly skill wise.

> - Level 4 Dodging
> - Level 3 Stealth

I'd turn these back on, especially stealth though. The cost/benefit
ratio is excellent. Don't underestimate stealth, it's extraordinary
when combined with conjurations--it lets you take on one monster at a
time, avoid dangerous monsters or drop a firestorm on a sleeping group
of elves, nagas, killer bees, etc. Spriggans have something like 50 or
60 aptitude in both those skills.

Make sure to set this option in your init.txt file:

stab_brand = hi:blue

Highlighted monsters are sleeping.

One last thing(but very important). Learn Detect Creatures and *use
it*. Cast it whenever you hit a new level. After travelling around, use
Ctrl+C to clear the level map and cast it again later to see when
monster positions have changed. If you use it right, it will save your
life many times over. Avoid areas with monsters that are particularly
hazardous to your health(like herds of c's before you get repel/deflect
missiles--yaktaurs or centaurs). Be on the lookout for detect
traps(book of surveyances) as well.

Train up Dodging to around 10-12 as soon as you can.

Spriggans are good at stealth, dodging, and running away - remember
that. You will need to find a replacement for poison magic pretty soon
at this point in the game: you'll meet a lot more resistant critters
deeper down, which is the drawback for the easy opening venom mages
have. Fire and/or earth magic is the classic choice for pure conjurers,
and I agree about holding out for that.

But ice magic shouldn't be underestimated - it has enough big blasters
for the endgame too, so if Vehumet is taking his time to give you the
books you want going with ice magic can be an option too.

Sterjs advice on these is spot on.

> Magical devices
> j - an encrusted bone wand {tried}
> U - a jeweled brass wand {tried}

Try to find out what these are. Zap them at a harmless monster with a
wall behind it.

> f - a book of Conjurations [ice]
> (You acquired it on level 9 of the Dungeon)

Book acquirements will look at your highest magic skill and select the
appropriate book if applicable. You probably had Spellcasting as your
highest skill and got a random book. Some skill juggling can be wise if
you want the "next-level" book. The advanced poison book isn't that
useful, but for instance the Book of the Warp (second warper book) can
be very helpful.

> Magical staves
> a - a staff of power (weapon)

Try to find a staff of conjuration. This only increases your mana pool,
which is not that useful.

> - Level 4 Dodging
> - Level 3 Stealth

Keep these on.

> - Level 8 Poison Magic

Turning this off is a good choice, though.

If he didn't have the ring of fire, Ice/Earth would be fine choice
instead of Fire/Earth. Rings of Fire are so powerful, though,
especially since his fire/ice magic aptitudes make those skills slow to
rise.

I missed that he acquired this book. He probably had highest
skill=conjurations(thus he got a conjurations book). In the future,
Staves "e|E" are the correct default choice for a vehumite conjurer. If
you choose books, you get a book that vehumet gaurantees anyeay. If
highest skill is conjurations, it's a near gauranteed staff of
conjurations which is incredibly powerful combined with Vehumet's
enchancement and rings of fire/ice(you can do broken things like cast
firestorm with 0 fire magic skill that way).

Yes, that's one thing in favour of going with Fire magic. But OTOH he
can learn and use the Ice spells right now, and you can definitely win
without using an ounce of Fire/Earth magic if you want to. Ice Bolt is
nice (deals a bit of unresistable damage, even to cold resistant
creatures), Freezing Cloud can be abused if you want to, Ice Storm is
equivalent to Fire Storm, Ozocubu's Armour can be helpful for a fragile
spriggan. And if you go the Ice/Earth route you can still use Crystal
Spear for the endgame.

For a beginner, I think, it might be better having extra firepower
right now, rather than waiting for the slight edge of Fire magic.

Besides, it would be nice to see someone using something else than
Fire/Earth for a conjurer. Smile

Agree completely about acquiring staffs of conjuration for Vehumetites.

I would wear the +3 evasion instead of the ring of sustenance. You do
have fast metabolism, but it is still only about half as fast as a
troll, but you've got the meat-eating mutation that lets you eat chunks
until engorged right? If so, the ring of sustenance isn't necessary
when there are corpses to eat around.

I would turn off spellcasting and conjurations for a time and let
Dodging and other skills build up.

Try to avoid casting these two often if you have food problems.

Good thing -20 percent doesn't mean very many HP for a spirrigan. The
others are making it harder, but you'll find a potion of cure mutation
sooner or later. And avoid trying to cast high level spells if you
don't have them at 'Good' at least.

I decided to go down the ice + earth route. Things have started to go a
bit wrong though. Somehow I ended up glowing a couple of times (once a
zot trap and once through a spell failure) and got lots of mutations
which are proving difficult. Not seen a potion of cure mutation yet.

I still think you should go Fire. I think you're underestimating just
how great the ring of fire is. You can pump all your skill points into
earth and still be able to cast firestorm with nearly no
skill(\ofConjurations+Vehumet Prayer+=ofFire). At the very least, focus
on Earth for awhile.

Wear these ASAP. I always wear unIDed cloaks/boots/gloves/hemls when I
don't have those yet because they're rarely going to be -2 or worse.

Dump those 4.

I already went into this.

You have much better rings available.

> r - a +5 ring of protection

Like this! Wear at all times.

> Z - a ring of sustenance (right hand)
> (You found it on level 1 of the Elven Halls)

Don't wear this. Your base hunger is only 5...I won with a character
with base hunger 5 and he didn't have built in Gourmand like you do.

Don't carry so many.

Nice.

Don't turn this off ever. Every character shoul invest skill points in
Fighting. The extra HP mean a lot.

> + Level 6 Dodging

Worth training this at some point as well.

> - Level 1 Evocations

Turn this on. It makes wands more powerful and it costs next t
nothing(Sp's have 60 aptitude).

Maybe it is too late to go fire with 12 spell slots devoted to cold.
Even still I'll bet you'll be able to cast firestorm before ice storm.
Skip Bolt of Iron for Lehudib's Crystal Spear next time.

Annoying but not deadly. Do you have a =of Sustain Abilities somewhere?
If so, it's time to wear it. Otherwise you're going to burn a lot of
!ofRestore Abilities as the game goes on. Next time don't cast spells
that aren't already "Good" unless you know what you're doing.

Good luck. I think you can tough out the mutations, although maprot and
level 2 statrot are quite annoying. Be thankful you didn't get "Space
distorts" though.

I'd like to second Denis on this.

However, if it turns out that food *is* a problem after all, it might
be wiser to leave Spellcasting on instead (though Conjurations should
definitely stay off for now). It'll make you hunger less when casting
your highest-level spells.

Seconded.

OK I've done that.

Not too much of a problem at the moment (in the Lair) but may be when I
return to the main dungeon.

Thanks.

Well the character died anyway (carelessness around a dragon).
However to learn the game I'm save file scumming. Obviously won't post
any more questions about a cheater character though.

Thanks for all the advice anyway.

Bad habits from Angband. I assumed I needed to carry a book to use the
spells in it.
